Telling someone their idea is bad after they asked for opinion is actually better support than blind agreement

We’re catering our own food mostly because FH wants authentic Mexican food (by authentic I mean super authentic food recipes that have been handed down through generations none of the Mexican restaurants can replicate them). We have a huge family many of which are used to high production of food and have offered to help. If you have an easy menu, the help and are aware of food safety it’s totally doable. Members in my family that will be cooking have a background in food safety. If you’re worried about your guest suing you I would consider hiring someone to cater for you otherwise do your own catering.

If people will sue catering companies they'll sue the bride and groom cooking dinner too. Bride and groom don't have enough money to shell out? The rest of the family may get sued too. Glad you think making people sick is so funny.

So there's this thing called a TASTING that you do with catering companies so you KNOW the food tastes the way you like.... just an FYI.

Our family is cooking for our reception. We've chosen the food and they offered to cook it all for us! We are very excited. Self catering is a great option.

I roll my eyes so hard when people start with the ITS MY DAY shrieking.

Anyway. Do plenty of people cook or do potlucks for parties all the time? Of course they do. Do most of them end in disaster, rampant with food poisoning? No, probably not. But why would you (the general “you”) want to stress over cooking on your wedding day? Why would you want to put your loved ones to work? If you’re thinking of doing a potluck, why would you put your guests to work? The last self catered party I went to, some of the food was cold even though the hostess had it warming in crock pots. No one wanted to tell her “hey, your food is cold” because she was already running around trying to host a party. So we ate it and smiled.

I’ll always be for catering. If cost is an issue, barbecue places are usually affordable. Chains like Olive Garden are often affordable as well.

So since your dad will be cooking during the ceremony (to make sure that the food is in fact serve safe and hot for the guests - especially during cocktail hour) - who have you asked to walk you down the aisle

And I assume you already crossed off the expense of a rehearsal and RD since youll be spending the night before cooking and prepping food for the day of - so that it remains fresh, and serve safe.

Also since you're going to be helping your family cook - will you be skipping out on the fancy hair and makeup - youll need to spend most of your morning prepping food instead of primping and getting ready like most brides?

I'm sure you have the right answers to these questions you most likely have definitely thought of =)

Hey Hannah, my Italian family has more certified chefs and restaurant owners than Carter has pills.

Listen to the advice here. Don't make your family work your wedding.

    For criminey's sake.

I apologize that I assumed a colloquial term for father was in fact your actual grandfather. I didn't realize it was that rude to not be able to read a strangers mind.

Your wedding being in the afternoon (which again going by the standard definition) is between 12-4:30pm actually would mean you would have LESS time to prep - than a wedding in the evening (5pm - 8pm) since you would have to start getting ready even earlier.

Also when are you planning on doing the night before prep that would need to be done since you won't be prepping you'll be enjoying your rehearsal dinner? Will you be staying up late?

I think it depends on how many guests you're having, what foods you plan to prepare, and stuff like that. Personally I wouldn't do it. Also like others have said food safety is a big issue, I would hire a caterer.

Whats your plan if the power goes off for a few hours the night before your wedding and all the food is spoiled?

There is something wrong when you are asking your family members to work on your wedding day (regardless of whether or not they "volunteered" or are "excited"). They will spend your entire ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and after dinner (cleaning) away from the event if they are cooking, maintaining, and cleaning properly. Why wouldn't you want them to be able to celebrate with you? As others have said, this is also a huge liability. People have sued for much less than becoming ill. There is absolutely no good reason for this.

I have known a few people to go this route and each one said they wouldn't do it again. It's your wedding day so ultimately you will do what you want, but you will not be able to enjoy and experience your wedding the way it is intended.

Bottom line, hire a caterer. I don't need to repeat all the reasons you've just learned here. Just do it.

It is possible but by the time you buy all of the food to cook you almost could just hire someone. Not to mention having to try and get the food to the location. I've seen people do it but I'm not a fan.

Do a breakfast or brunch buffet. Or sandwiches and salads. Go on Pinterest and look for ideas. Please get a caterer !

We cooked the food for my brother’s wedding. However the bride and groom didn’t help too much so they weren’t stressed out and it was a very small wedding. We (sisters, mom, aunts) cooked everything the day before. It was a lot of work and very stressful. You have to pick foods that will taste good reheated and have a lot of help.

It’s super scary seeing how many people there are out there that are self-catering.
