Freaking out i might have to get married again!?!

Abigail, on June 21, 2021 at 4:11 AM Posted in Community Conversations 1 6
We got married on may 23rd.

I thought I did everything right but I have a gut feeling I missed something.
We received our (what I thought was) marriage license in the mail, it had a certified stamp on it but it was black and white. (I just had a baby and so little sleep I thought that was the last step)
Well, I lost that certified stamped marriage license and I’m freaking out because a part of me thinks I was supposed to take that to the county clerks office and I didn’t and now it’s lost.

Double check with your officiant as I know ours sent it in the mail for us. You can also call the county clerk’s office to see if they have you on file as married (I called just to make sure we were married!).

Congratulations on your new baby too ❤️❤️❤️

Definitely check with the clerks office to see if they have your marriage on file.

    You have a few options:

    1. Check with your county clerk's office.

    2. If your clerk's office has a "public records search," you can look there. Marriages are generally public record (I can find an electronic copy of my marriage license/certificate in the records search.)

    3. Ask your officiant.

Usually, the officiant handles this. It's generally part of the fee you pay them to perform the ceremony. You may have simply been given a copy for your own records.

So, it sounds like maybe you received the certified copy of your marriage certificate. If that’s it, you should be able to get another from the clerk’s office. Usually, you sign the license on your wedding day; the officiant submits it to the clerk; and they mail you a certified copy.

Like PP say, just contact the county clerk's office to see what their records state. No need to panic yet. And go ahead and request a new certified copy anyway, to replace the one you lost; you might need one at some point, so you may as well get one now.
