Friend's ring size?

StPaulGal, on March 20, 2017 at 6:04 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 18

Any sneaky ideas on how to find out a friend's ring size?

I got one of my bridesmaids an antique right hand ring as her BM gift, and I want to get it sized before I give it to her. I could just come right out and ask, but that would take away an element of the surprise. Anybody have any stealthier ideas?

I mean this may not apply, but for our friends who are trying to shop for a ring for his girlfriend, we used the excuse of needing to clean my ring, eventually we worked in having her get sized. Not sure if that will apply to this situation though.

She does wear rings pretty often--borrowing a ring she is wearing is the perfect solution!! Thanks so much! I'm so glad I asked!

I found this out after the fact, but my best friend came over to hang out one day for the express purpose of getting my ring size for my now husband. Apparently when she went to use the bathroom she actually took a pen and paper in there and traced a few of my rings to take to the jeweler to get my size.

    Ask them?

ETA; It's much better to ask and get it right than mess it up & have to potentially change it later!

Do you have wedding bands yet? Ask her to go look at bands with you and get her to try one one

Also, your dominant hand is usually half a size bigger, so if they are left handed and are going to wear it on their right it may be too big. I know this because FH measured the rings I have when getting an engagement ring and it fits my right hand but is too big for my left haha. And my band is half a size smaller and fits perfectly.

    ETA: messed up

My shoe size is a 9, and ring is a 4.75. I think my biggest finger is like a 7. Where did you hear that from?

Definitely don't judge by shoe size. I'm an 8 shoe size and my ring size is a 4.

I would work it into conversation. Ask to look at one of her rings and when you looking at it casually ask what ring size she is.

I did this with a friend recently. I snuck it in to our conversation and said, "Oh by the way I'm ordering this ring but I don't know my size! I think we are around the same size--what's yours?" That won't work for everyone but it might be worth a try.

What if you played it off like you ordered a ring for yourself and the store swears it's X size but it just isn't fitting you then ask her to try it on? Maybe lame, but it's an option. It can open up conversation for "I swear I was an 8! What size are you?" that seems somewhat less awkward and forced.

@Jessica, I thought I heard that somewhere, too! I wear a 6.5-7 and my ring is a 6. So I just figured it to be true. Haha.

My FH got my mom to help. She found out my ring size by getting rid of some of her jewelry which included rings. So when I was trying out the rings she was keeping note of what size I was and which on fit my middle finger.

Worked pretty well I had no clue. Although the ring that she got the measurement on was the wrong hand and it was a thicker ring. So the engagement ring turned out to big.

@ Jessica B: if ring size is usually close to shoe size, I am a weird human!!! My ring size is 5 and I wear a size 10 in shoe!! LOL Smiley winking

When my besties now husband wanted to pop the question and didn't know her size. Me and her were just casually talking and I was telling her how fat my fingers were compared to her and I was like let me see your ring and tried it on each finger to see where it went on me and then had that sized.

Is it wrong that I'm more curious about the shoe and ring size? Lol. My ring is 5.5 and my shoe is 6.5

OP, does she wear rings regularly? Maybe comment how you like one from that hand and ask to try it on and gauge size from there?
