Frivolous Items

KatyP, on June 10, 2014 at 10:38 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 20

Has anyone purchased anything for their wedding that was completely unnecessary? So far, the things we have spent money on are things we need and have a purpose. However, there is something I have wanted since before I ever even had a fiance! I saw these high five cake toppers on Pinterest years ago and LOVED them. We aren't even having a cake topper but I can't stop thinking about them and I'm (this) close to buying them just as an accessory on the cake table.

What are some things you have spent money on unnecessarily?

Stamps!!! aye yaye yaye-- soo much money on stamps!!

Yes, you need stamps for the invitations/RSVP cards, but I saw these vintage North American Wildlife stamps, and they were perfect, so I spent more than twice what I had to on stamps. . . .*sigh*

I splurged on our cake server. No need to spend as much as I did on it... but they are SO COOL and I've never seen anything like them. Real antler handles.

That cake topper is cool lol!

This is a loaded question as most of the things people have are unnecessary. Some of the things we're having for example are: personalized napkins, matchbooks, tears of joy tissue packets, chair covers and sashes, a dessert table, I Spy cards, a photo booth, a second dress for the reception, prize for whoever catches the garter...I'm sure there are lots more that I can't think of right this moment.

    Is everything an option?

    Hahha no but really....

I think my cake toppers were $120

I upgraded my napkin colors and got table runners instead of just sticking with the venues supplied white: $340

I don't like string beans and FH really wanted asparagus.....extra 150 to upgrade

    I really wanted a mashed potatoe station....we arnt having a stationed wedding....extra 400

    Candy buffet: 600

I would have saved so much money if I didn't just "need" these things.

Ha! Those stamps are awesome! As is the cake server set. Definitely original!

I am struggling with spending 50-60 bucks on the cake topper (that won't even go on our cake!) but it fits my fiance and I perfectly! I do love me some high fives.

Isn't pretty much everything for a wedding frivolous and unnecessary? All you REALLY need is an officiant and a marriage license. LOL! With that said, my frivolous expense was uplighting for the reception. FH really wanted it, so I got it as a surprise for him.

And yes, I agree that most wedding items are unnecessary lol. But at least everything else we are spending money on are things that will be used, eaten, etc. Not technically necessary, but useful.

Personalized M&Ms but since our reception theme is M&M (Mike and Michelle) it was totally worth it.

    Bride robe

    bride tank top

new lingerie for the night of

    mr. and Mrs. luggage tags

    toasting flutes

bottle of port for FH's wedding present

I think I got sucked into buying a lot of un necessary items that were just wants and not needed.

Most things. I mean in all honesty, other than an officiant (which I'm getting for free) there is nothing necessary.

We bought the motorcycle cake topper (really salt and pepper shakers) when we first got engaged and then we found a theme and bought the dragons to match our theme. I am always going to buy something and having to stop myself because its not needed or outside the budget such as a MUA or DOC. I can do my make up myself and his 5 sisters said they would help with the day of set up.

I bought 10 strands of garland after christmas thinking I could incorporate it somehow...now I have no idea what we will do with it. At least I can use it during the holidays though.

I agree, almost everything is frivolous. I do love those postage stamps, though!!! I'm using rose stamps (Canada) and superman stamps for thank you's.

I feel like the chair ties I'm making are completely frivolous. At least the tulle was only $100.

@tnovak - I think you may have just sealed the deal. High fiving each other after 50 years? That sounds amazing.
