Fun Cocktail Hour Ideas!

Janele, on July 26, 2016 at 2:00 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 31

So my wedding is nothing expensive or crazy. My guests and I are all very active, fun people who will spend the wedding mostly dancing the night away. My fear is that the time during the cocktail hour when I am taking my photos with the wedding party, that the down time will really bore my guests as I have been bored at other weddings at this time.

I am trying to gather ideas on what to do during this time. Games? Dance offs? We want more than just food and chatter at this time, even if my DJ needs to get involved. Please be as specific as possible with your ideas! Thank you so much and hope everyone else has a wonderfully, amazing day!

Food and booze. Food and booze. Make sure there are enough places to sit. Other than that, adults can entertain themselves.

    Food, booze, alcohol.

If your guests can't eat, drink, and talk to one another for less than an hour without getting bored, no amount of games will hold their interest either.

At one wedding I went to, the DJ assistant floated around during cocktail hour, meeting the guests and playing a quick hand of blackjack . if the guest won they got a scratch off ticket (all purchased by the bride and groom of course).

Hi hear ya, Janele! In addition to the bar and apps, we plan to have cornhole and giant jenga....very popular in our circle. Another idea would maybe be to do some sort of more interactive guest book. I haven't gotten this far in my planning yet, but like the idea of a Polaroid guest book and happy hour could be a good time for guests to accomplish this without creating a bottleneck.

The most exciting thing about cocktail hour is cocktails. Just make sure there's food and alcohol and people will be fine. Adults do not need planned activities to keep from being bored.

I think having a few games would be fun like wedding Corn hole or a ring toss

Cocktails and food. People will want to catch up with each other, which is fine.

That being said, one of the best cocktail hours I've been at recently had a five piece latin conga band. It was fantastic!

Thanks for all the ideas! We won't have many appetizers because we can't afford it. Also, the person who said it was cringe worthy for the dance off.. I went to a very nice wedding that had one and it was one of the best parts and it was absolutely amazing!

What does not many appetizers mean?

Just food, music and alcohol. People will socialize and get a buzz going before dinner.

Not many appetizers means we need to go to the store before hand and find some plates of finger foods lol. There will be an open bar though with plenty of alcohol.

We are thinking about having board games for the cocktail hour. Our wedding is outdoors and we have lots of lawn space. So, we may do lawn games, also.

So can you clarify that please OP. You are going to get married. Run to the store pick up finger foods. Drop them off for cocktail hour and then have pictures? How longs your gap?

Who's going to serve? Who's going to clean up plates and napkins after?

We will have someone pick something before the wedding and probably just give it to the caterer. No one needs to serve it, it will be on tables for people to grab. And if there is any trash there will be a trash can for people to throw it away...

You need to have enough food for your cocktail hour. I recommend veggies and dips, fruit, and some finger sandwiches or hors d'oeurves. Please, please, please serve food if you are serving that much alcohol.

Are you even allowed to have food NOT from a licensed insured caterer? The caterer isn't going to want you to give it to them, that's disrespectful of their business. Please say this is a joke.

ETA: Also, any self respecting reasonable cost caterer can provide fruit, veggie, and cheese trays for basically the price you get at the store.

I talked to him about it already and he said it's fine. And Jessie, those are the exact types we are planning on serving.
