Garland Centerpiece Advice

Maui K, on October 19, 2016 at 12:59 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 21

A little background...I'm having a DW in Maui and am trying to DIY the centerpieces because the florists are out of my price range. I'm tossing around the idea of using bay leaf garland in the middle of the tables with some colorful flowers intertwined.

Florists and wholesalers on Maui quoted me $25 per foot of garland without flowers in it, which is why I am considering DIY.

I'm planning on purchasing bay leaf garland from an Etsy store (selling it for about $7 per foot!) and then purchasing flowers from a wholesaler on the island or a company like FiftyFlowers.com (although they don't ship free to Hawaii).

My question is, what type of flowers do you think would look best in this garland? The photo below is a photo from the company I'll be buying it from, so it is expected to be the same color and thickness as the photo below.

I am looking to add bright colors like pink, orange, etc! And maybe a table runner underneath the garland?

I'm unsure if I should use a few large flowers, or a lot of small ones.

So are you arriving in advance enough to DIY these in your hotel room?

Yes I am! And I won't make them the full length of the table/draping over, so it won't be too much work (I hope!).

You have to be careful on what you are bringing because they have laws on what you can and can't bring on and off of the island so I would check on that. But I think larger flowers would look better. That's a personal preference though.

@Jessica - I would have it shipped to Hawaii. But that's a good point! I'll make sure that it will be allowed!

You could collect plumeria when you get there. It smells great and it's free!

I think it looks pretty as long as you are using real plants.

As far as your actual question, FlowerMoxie has brightly colored Ranunculus, Dahlias, and Peonies that all look very pretty.

Are you really going to save money after factoring in shipping costs to Hawaii? What is your backup plan if the flowers don't make it there for some reason, or arrive damaged?

That's what I am currently trying to figure out. Currently yes it will be cheaper than a florist on the island.

Backup plan: there is a Costco nearby that sells tropical flowered centerpieces. Not my taste but they are a good price.

How many garlands do you need to make?

also, consider the hardiness of the flowers. will they have those little water tubes, because if not think about how long they will last. Plumeria will wilt and turn brown in hours. I would either buy fresh cut flowers on the island or ship one of those variety packs from fifty flowers or another online site.

Aloha! Shipping to Maui typically negates any savings you've found. I ordered all my flowers from Aloha Island Leis on Oahu and had them overnighted for the day of the wedding -- even with shipping this was a savings for the items I wanted over purchasing here on Maui. They did an amazing job with our leis and garlands!

You're getting married in Hawaii, so choose Hawaiian appropriate flowers. For my tables, I also made garlands from palm branches in my yard: FREE99! I used fake flowers for my tables, but if you want real, I suggest Protea. They have numerous varieties and will last all day, unlike plumeria or hibiscus.

Make sure you call your local florists too: Flowers by Cora in Kihei, Kahului Floral, etc. You'll get a better quote than you will from the florists within the resort properties.

    Where are you getting married?

MauiWowie, Thank you for your help! I will definitely check the place you mentioned on Oahu Smiley smile. I haven't heard of Flowers by Cora, but I've contacted many of the other florists! All quoting $25/foot so far.

    I'm getting married in Lahaina.

I'm going to keep looking Smiley smile thank you!

On the West Side, I like Napili Florist if you haven't already contacted them. There's also a greenhouse/nursery in Lahaina, I think it's called Dan's if you still wanna do DIY.
