According to Bridebox, the garter toss is a tradition that most couple's participate in without knowing it's history and purpose. Story has it that many decades ago, there was a superstition that owning a piece of the brides wedding dress would bring good luck, so guests would attack the bride to rip off a piece of her dress. That led to brides wearing a garter to be given out as a piece of luck to a special guests.

What are your thoughts? Will you participate in the garter removal and toss at your wedding?

My husband and I also thought it would be awkward and cringy because it seems too sexual.

The purpose of a garter is to represent a piece of the dress that the bride would give to a guest as a piece of good luck.

We’re doing it! I think the tosses are fun, and FH really wanted to do the garter toss too.

From the videos I've seen, a lot of guests find it really fun, especially if the grooms does a little dance to get under the brides dress Smiley laugh

We will not be doing this. Mainly because the tradition is to toss to the songle people at the wedding and there will not be many single guests at our reception. FH and I are both the youngest in our families so everyone else is already married.

Consider doing a twist on this tradition for the married couples. Maybe not a garter toss but something married couples might find useful such as a date night book, tickets to the movies, or a spa day. This is just a suggestion.

We definitely won't be doing that, that's something I've never heard of and seems weird

No, we're skipping the bouquet toss and the garter. Just moving on, I honestly don't think they will be missed
