Garter Toss alternatives?

Future Mrs. P, on June 17, 2013 at 3:08 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 19

My FH doesn't want to do the garter toss, but I already have a custom garter (with a toss garter included) I purchased off etsy. He mainly thinks it's creepy to go up my dress in front of 100+ people and pull off the garter.

Any fun ideas on how to still have a 'garter toss' without him going up my dress?!

Oh wow. LOL I never heard of a groom not wanting to do this. I'm interested in hearing ideas. I would think maybe just wear the one you will keep and have the other one aside for when you are doing the toss? Does he like football? Have it wrapped around a football ready to go. We will do the football thing after my husband removes the garter because its a fall wedding and football season which we love : )

I didn't want a garter toss, or a bouquet toss. FH said we have to. *sigh* I don't like the idea of him going up my dress in front of grandparents, etc. If you get any good ideas, I'd like to know too. Cuz right now, I have none. Lol.

@Courtney - I wanted him to do it, but I don't want to push him into something he doesn't want!

My only idea so far is wearing it on my arm, or taking it off myself and handing it to him.

I found this online. I think I'll propose this idea to FH and see if he goes for it.

"To remove a garter in a much more alluring and appealing way is to stay standing. Take off your shoe, reach down and grab the bottom of your dress on the SIDE of the leg that has the garter on it, raise your skirt just high enough for your garter to show, and position your leg attractively out to the front and side. The groom can then kneel down and slip the garter off your leg."

I really don't like when the groom LITERALLY crawls up in the Bride's dress to get the garter. I mean, really, they aren't THAT high up on the leg. I find it kind of distasteful to do that in front of parents and grandparents (atleast, my grandparents would be really upset about it).

We haven't decided officially on the whole thing (I haven't bought a garter set yet) - but I told FH if we do it - he isn't going to be disappearing under my dress entirely lol.

Even if we do the garter toss, we definitely would NOT require the catchers to interact. Having the guy that caught the garter place it on the girl that caught the bouquet sounds so creepy.

I think you can still do it just dont have him take it off of you. Just announce that you will be doing a garter toss but have it somewhere where u can just grab it and throw it!

I catch the bouquet a lot ( I'm tall) and I've never had to interact with the garter catcher. Seems weird, I'd be weirded out

We definitely did it. I surprised him with an Orioles garter (that we kept) & then had another garter for him to toss. We had a ton of single people so it was fun. Run the standing thing by him and see if that would make him more comfortable.

I was in my cousin's wedding when I was eight, and they did a bouquet toss and a teddy bear toss. So instead of throwing a garter, the groom threw a teddy bear! It was mostly for the kids though. My sister and I caught both of them!

Never been to a wedding where the catchers had to do anything else.... But I told dh I didn't want to do either, he was bummed about the toss, I was like most of your friends are couples anyways plus do you really want to be up my dress with your mom like right there?

I think the most I’ve ever seen “the ones who catch it” do is take a picture together. Kind of like that movie Picture Perfect with Jennifer Aniston.

I too am nervous about the garter toss. Hope all works out for you!

I am not going to do that either, but I am going to have the couple who have been together the longest get a bouquet of flowers instead!

The taking off the garter is for the honeymoon Smiley winking

FH thinks it would be awkward too and I hate my legs. I think I might have him toss it but not make a show of going up my dress. We were even thinking if having him wear it and me take it off to be funny.

Yeah I had a garter shoved up my leg by a stranger before. SOOOOO awkward. I think they said every inch above the knee equals 7 years of good luck for the couple. They are set.

Every wedding I've been to has had a garter toss....but I don't for the life of me remember ever seeing a groom take it off? And they certainly don't put it on the girl who catches the bouquet where I'm from! I'm certain of that because I've caught two! Lol
