Garter toss- switching it up & is this weird??

Elizabeth, on July 27, 2016 at 2:39 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 23

Okay so, we're not big fans of the origins of the garter toss & bouquet toss. But we still want traditional aspects to our wedding- including this. SO! This is going to sound crazy, but- we were thinking about flipping this tradition. As in he'll wear a garter, I'll take it off and throw it to the guys (the garter will be on his calf so it'll be easy to take off). He'll then throw the bouquet to the girls lol. We're crazy and love fun stuff, so we thought it might be funny.

Now my question for you all- is this random and people won't get it? Or funny? We'd play around with it and all that so it's obvious. I laughed really hard when we talked about it and the more FH thought about it, the more he laughed about it too... Thoughts?

I've only seen one garter tossed, in my entire life. I've seen a few bouquets, but in my family/social circle no one tosses anything. My parents have been married almost 40 years and nothing was tossed at their wedding.

I would not find it funny.

It depends on your guests. Are they funny people too? Because if only you and your FH find it funny then it is awkward to everyone else.

    I would find it funny.

Garter and bouquet tosses have happened at every wedding I've been to.

I think it's weird. But I think the traditions are weird in and of themselves.

I'm on the side of it being funny. You could also maybe have the guys grab for the bouquet and the girls for the garter?

Also what Amanda said. It would make it that much better if the girls caught the garter and the men caught the bouquet.

I think it's funny, and it's a know-your-crowd type of thing. If they would think it's funny too, then go for it!

Funny and takes the awkwardness out of a garter toss.

I think it's strange. Hopefully you have no friends who are soon to be married because I'm sure they would get on WW and talk about the foolishness they saw.

@Dij- that made me laugh, for some reason lol

@Vanessa- that's exactly what we were going for. Trying to take the awkwardness around it, but still have some traditions.

But yeah- our crowd is pretty playful and goofy. Fairly young, too (everyone "old" has passed, unfortunately)... There are a few who are a little more "proper", but overall it's a fun crowd.

@Devon- hah! I thought about that. But, I do think it's the better than him crawling up a tomb of hot nastyness. Plus he'll put it on like 5 minutes beforehand. Crisis averted.

I'd laugh, I think. As long as you can do it in a way that highlights the awkwardness and makes it silly, and not in a way that makes everyone feel even more awkward.
