Gathering Instead of Rehearsal Dinner?

Ashley, on May 4, 2021 at 7:52 AM Posted in Parties and Events 0 6
I am getting married September 10th. All of my family and friends live in a town that is over an hour from me, as well as our wedding location. Because of this, we are considering not having a rehearsal dinner the night before our wedding, as we are getting married on a Friday and I don’t want people to have to leave work early on Thursday, drive over an hour in rush hour traffic, etc for a rehearsal and then drive back the following day for the wedding. All of my friends have already been married and know the drill.

However, because of Covid we have not had any pre-wedding events thus far and was thinking of hosting a small get-together in August to celebrate our engagement and the upcoming wedding in-lieu of a rehearsal dinner. It would be just the wedding party and parents invited and it would be local for everyone in the wedding party (except us, as we are an hour away).
Is this a bad idea? Do you think people would be more annoyed to attend a rehearsal dinner on a Thursday that’s an hour away from them, or have to give up a Saturday to celebrate with the wedding party a month prior to the wedding? Also, I have no idea what I would formally call the “gathering” in August, as it’s too late for an engagement party, and it also wouldn’t be a rehearsal.

You can call it a bridal luncheon or bridal get together or really whatever you want honestly. I don't think putting together a little gathering a month before is a problem. These are your closest friends or family, so I would hope they wouldn't consider spending some time with you "giving up a Saturday."

I think this is a brilliant (and super considerate) idea!! That way, you still get to host them and celebrate, but you avoid the issue of Mon-Fri workers having to take two days off!

This is the most commonly done thing for local weddings. OOT take Friday rehearsals. In town do them either one morning or an e ening for a half hour. But whe weding Party din er with SO, and families, occurs one of the 2 previous weekends. Particularly SO of WP prefer it to after a rehearsal, when they stand around 45 minutes. And most family and WP comment that it is better than back to back events. 🙂Do it.

(I'm just going to follow Hannah around and agree with her today Smiley smile )

This is good advice. It's completely fine to skip a rehearsal (like you said, everyone knows what they need to do already) and therefore you can do away with a rehearsal dinner. Go ahead and plan your gathering with friends and family, but I wouldn't try to bill it as "in lieu of a rehearsal dinner" because that will just be confusing. This get together in August doesn't even need a name. People like parties for their own sake.

I love this idea! If I'm close enough to someone to be in their wedding, I would be happy to do either...but if I had a choice...I would prefer the Saturday party over the Thursday driving in rush hour. I think that is so considerate of you. Any of the names listed above are great & I hope it's an amazing time!
