Get 2 copies of ur Marriage Certificate

So this is a Fyi when you request an official copy of ur marriage certificate go ahead and get 2 copies. You dont think u will need more than one but doesn’t hurt to have 2.


I filed for a new social security card almost 1.5 months ago In which social security needs an official marriage certificate. And right now the offices are closed to the public so all applico& documents must be mailed. Sounds easy peasy. I got my new SS card within 2 weeks & got a paper saying this is my receipt for my application & my documents will be returned to me but nothing came in the mail A week after that I called & they said it will come in the mail. Still nothing in the mail. I have called a total of 3 times & still no one has updated me, only that they would talk to their manager. The only thing they tell me is that I should have received it by now.

So I just submitted an application (which had to be notarized) for a new official marriage certificate since I consider mine to be lost now that it should have been returned about amonth ago. Ik covid is causing delays but its kinda annoying.

    Great advice. I always get multiple copies of major documents for that very reason.

    I’ve heard some say to even get 4-6 copies. Seems excessive but I guess you never know when you’ll need it and you won’t have to go through a long process to get more if you need more

    When we applied for our marriage license a couple days ago, the county clerk recommended 3 copies. And in our state it's $20 for the first copy and $3 each additional copy as long as there're ordered at the same time. So we plan on getting 4 copies total, just in case.

    Actually u should get several copies... u need it for soc sec, banking, car insurance, prolly health insurance, when you do name changes and they ask for official docs

    Thanks for the advice! I think I'm going to wait to change my name until social security offices reopen. What else will you need a copy of your marriage certificate for?

    For the DMV and passport. U will need it for almost any Place that you need to change your name such as your bank too. But the first 2 are the main ones.

    That is actually a bit excessive but if you’re trying to change your name quickly all at the same time then maybe it would be a good idea to get 4.


    For example. I have to send 1 copy to SS, 1 copy to change my passport, and 1 copy to take into DMV. If I needed my name changed on all three at the same time right now because of Covid two of my copies would be physically gone because I have to mail them in.

    Thank you! It feels weird because im in limbo with my name. My social has new last name, everything else has maiden name because I cant fully show photo ID with new name because i dont have my marriage certificate to take to DMV. I recently had to fill out some new paperwork for some places including my daughters school which I would like to start off with the new name but I couldn’t because my ID shows my old name loll.

    This is the definition of “it will be fine they said”. Mail it they said. Sure social security is responsible, they will return ur stuff. Im sure there’s plenty of ppl w no problem. Not like my marriage certificate has my old last name, birth date, place of birth, social security number & new name on it. 😩😐🙃. Not like maybe it got sent to someone else’s address lol. *internal screaming*

    I was glad when she pointed that out because we tend to misplace things because we tend to put them in a "safe place" but forget where that safe place is. 🤣😂🤣

    I think I got like 5-6 copies. We got a confidential marriage license so I figured get all our copies now since we won’t be in this state forever. This way I can mail one or two off without worry.

    Oh I forgot to add to my last reply. I had double checked my “safe place” Where I keep all my important documents and I thought I saw the marriage certificate. I was like Oh its here. Whats wrong w me it was here the whole time. But then I realized it was a photo copy of the official certificate lol. I said oh 😐 nvm. Before I mailed it in i made a photocopy of it.

    You actually should get more than 2 just in case. Get a couple of certified copies and a couple of regular copies just to have. I work in a courthouse and you'll need it for alot of name-changing things!
