So this is a Fyi when you request an official copy of ur marriage certificate go ahead and get 2 copies. You dont think u will need more than one but doesn’t hurt to have 2. I filed for a new social security card almost 1.5 months ago In which social security needs an official marriage certificate....

I filed for a new social security card almost 1.5 months ago In which social security needs an official marriage certificate. And right now the offices are closed to the public so all applico& documents must be mailed. Sounds easy peasy. I got my new SS card within 2 weeks & got a paper saying this is my receipt for my application & my documents will be returned to me but nothing came in the mail A week after that I called & they said it will come in the mail. Still nothing in the mail. I have called a total of 3 times & still no one has updated me, only that they would talk to their manager. The only thing they tell me is that I should have received it by now.

So I just submitted an application (which had to be notarized) for a new official marriage certificate since I consider mine to be lost now that it should have been returned about amonth ago. Ik covid is causing delays but its kinda annoying.

    Yea I have some photocopies but Im specifically waiting for the certified one back so I can go to dmv

    Yeah, we got 2 copies when we got ours. Also, for things like credit card companies and such, I was able to email scanned copies of my marriage certificate and updated driver's license, which made the process super easy. So I would double check with some places (the bank for my checkingand savings/dmv/passport/social security all wanted the original copies in hand).

    Thanks for that. I have photocopies but im waiting for my certified copy so I can go to the dmv to get a new License first before changing it anywhere else. I also had recently got a new passport so sometime within thr next 6mo I would like to change my name on my passport too since its free change within a year.

    Yeah, you need to change it with SS and then driver's license, and they want originals. After that, the order is up to you. Being able to email scanned images out to a lot of places made it a whole lot easier to do the bulk of the name change process.

    AFTER 1.5 MONTHS AND 6 CALLS TO THE SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE. They threw away my marriage certificate. 😡. She said theres no papertrail for my certificate. Usually there is a tracking number but mine doesn’t have one so most likely it got shredded. Im annoyed at the lack of effort to get me answers. If they would have caught it the first time I called they would’ve been able to go through the pile for shredding and find my certificate. So now I spent $30 on a new certificate that I ordered. Very annoyed.

    oh and I forgot to add that this is "most likely what happened". There is no way to tell for sure. I asked if it got mailed to someone elses address and she told me probably not, but once again, no way to tell forsure.

    Good advice! I ordered 3 copies, one more extra in case it gets lost in the mail in all the name changing. But my question for you is when you sent your stuff into the social security office, what did you send for you proof of ID (license, passport, something else)? My fear is what is happening to you is that it never gets back to me!

    Yea they straight up lost it. After almost 2 months their answer to be was they THINK they threw it away.


    I only submitted application for new SS card and my marriage certificate. I dont even remember sending a copy of my ID. Double check just in case by calling ur local office. Dont call customer service u might be hold forever. I called my local office each time & wait time was always 5-10min.

    Thats such bull! Thank you for the advice, I will definitely call the local branch to ask about ID because I thought you needed it but won't risk it if I don't have to!!

    Yes. And if I remember correctly when I originally called to ask what documents I need I was surprised because I remember The person saying but I only need the mayor certificate but definitely double check
