Getting family ordained

Natalie, on December 7, 2020 at 3:45 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 10

Hello fellow brides-

My fiance and I asked our cousin to marry us on the day of the wedding. He is not ordained currently and we are looking for organizations or websites that we could do that through. Has anybody else experienced this or have any suggestions?

My advice would be to first confirm with the county that you are getting married in that they would recognize the marriage. Not all states recognize weddings that were performed by someone ordained online. For example. I'm from Pennsylvania and that's where we got married. They don't recognize marriages performed by someone ordained online. They have very specific requirements as to who can perform a marriage ceremony.

First find out if it's legal in your state. Then the marriage license office can give you information on how to become ordained. Typically the person you pick to be ordained fills out paperwork from that office and is legally able to do so for the wedding day only.

Yes to what was mentioned above! Tennessee doesn’t allow people to be “online” ordained.

We got married in Florida, which allows this. We had my husbands uncle ordained by:

It was important to us that we agree with the statement of faith.

As others said, make sure this is legal in your state/county. My husband's uncle married us in NJ and used this site: https://www.ulc.org/

    ULC is the most popular.

Like the others said, make sure it is legal in your county and in your state. And please enter this idea with caution - I am sure your cousin is great but we asked a friend (actually my hubby asked him without asking me) and he did not treat it as a priority. I ended up writing the entire service, he did not think any rehearsal was needed, he rejected my reading, etc........

Please make sure cousin is up to the task. I have also heard horror stories of people getting stage fright!! Yikes!

ULC is popular, but also use google to find any other sites that might work best for you! Check with the state and county laws as well to make sure it's legal for someone ordained online to marry you! I think having someone close to you marry you is very sweet and memorable.

As far as writing the service goes, you can either search online for pre-made outlines, or make one. Usually the officiant does this, but if you have a certain way you want your ceremony to go, then you can also create the outline!

Our friend is getting ordained online and marrying us. I already had our wedding ceremony outlined and completed before we picked an officiant. So all he has to do is read through what I created, and he's good to go!

In terms of outlining the ceremony, I know my husband's uncle got a ton of resources when he completed the ULC certification. He used those and I think some Googling, as well as talking with us, to create a lovely ceremony.
