Getting married before the ceremony

My fiance and i want to get legally married before we have our ceremony, due to school and money. Is this a thing? How many people do this? My family is for it except my sister and his dad is for it.

FH and I have discussed getting legally married about a few weeks before just to get the paperwork started. Also, it would be nice since my mom would do that ceremony and then our pastor would be the one who would officiate our actual ceremony

A lot of people want to be able to have a ceremony with their friends and family in attendance - what "normal" people get. My fiance and I have to get married for immigration reasons way prior to our actual wedding because we have no other legal option. It's devastating to me that we can't have a real ceremony so I would like to at least feel like I could have a normal wedding, even if it's fake. It would take a pretty bad friend to think it matters if someone had to do it for a logistical, monetary, or legal reason.
