Getting married before wedding?

Emma, on May 22, 2020 at 11:23 AM Posted in Married Life 0 9
So me and my fiancé are wanting to move; we have neighbors from hell.
We currently are renting but want to buy. We have found quiet a few houses we like. My fiancé got out of the military last august. The problem is, to have me on the VA loan and for them to consider my credit score (mine is better then his) we have to be married. I don’t really want to get married before hand but considering we already live together is it really going to change much? He wouldn’t wear his ring till October. My biggest thing is my last name. I am taking his but can I wait till October to do so? I just don’t know what to do.

You should check your states requirements to see if there’s a time restriction on changing your last name due to getting married. As long as they don’t have a time limit then it should be okay to change your last name later on.

You can still get married and change your name legally with the DMV but you don’t have to change it on social media or actually use that name yet or anything. Like you can still go by your maiden name until October. No one has to see what your license says lol

I have a friend who did this exact thing with the VA loan and she’s still regretting it because she thinks her wedding day wasn’t special. Just make sure it’s something you are ok with. She waited a year to change her name and that part was fine.

I want all the feels on my wedding day. But idk if it’s worth putting up with the neighbors. He wants us to make the decision ASAP because we’re going to look at a house tomorrow, though I don’t love the house so I don’t feel obligated to say yes.

Girl, there are no rules anymore. I'm going on my honeymoon five months before I'm even married! I think you're right, things won't change that much. And even if you do have to change your name with the DMV, you can wait to go by your new last name.

I think it's totally fine! And no one really has to know, so you'll still get the same environment from the guests.

You can also legally change your name later. I don't know if its more complicated or not, but I had a teacher in middle school that finally took her husbands name after being married for something like 15 years.

Within 30 days of the wedding or within 30 days of changing your name with social security? May want to double check that. Typically you have to change you name with social security before you change on your drivers license and other identifying documents.

Are there any other lenders who would be willing to put you two on a loan without being married? This should be possible. Or is the VA loan that much of a better deal that it’s worth the complication?
