Getting Married catholic

Taryn , on January 4, 2019 at 1:48 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 16
I have done research about this subject and am finding mixed results. My fiance and I are catholic and are getting married in 2020 but my biggest concern for my dad is walking me down the aisle, will he be able to do that?.

Is there a reason you think your dad would be unable to walk you?

The last catholic wedding that I went to, the bride was escorted by her father, but the priest did not ask who was "giving her away." I'm not catholic, nor do I know if this is typical, but I can see the issue with using the verbiage "giving the bride away."

Have you picked out a church & priest? I've been to two Catholic weddings, both had their father walk them down the aisle. But every church differs so I would double check before booking.

I’ve been to a few catholic weddings and I’ve always seen the bride’s dad escort her down the aisle. Full mass and non full mass. But maybe other catholic brides could chime in.

The Church prefers that the couple enters together, but most parishes will allow the father to escort the daughter since it's tradition. I attend a very conservative, very traditional Catholic Church and there was no issue with my father walking me down the aisle.

You can be escorted by your father in a Catholic church.

I'm Catholic and have been to several Catholic weddings (with and without full Mass, at Cathedrals, etc.) and have always seen the bride walk in with her father.

I didn't know this was an issue.

I'm getting married in a Ukrainian Catholic church and the priest asked if we wanted an American wedding so my dad could walk me down the aisle.
Just be sure to ask your priest.

I've been to 30+ catholic weddings (my parent's large families are very Catholic). In all cases, the father walked the bride down the aisle. I am also the product of many years of Catholic education and I've never heard of this being a concern.

With Catholic weddings it all really depends on your priest. That's why you are finding and hearing so many mixed answers. I would ask each priest you meet with about this.

(and what I mean by all is that some priests won't do a ceremony outside, some will. Some won't marry a couple that lives together, some will.)

At every catholic wedding I’ve ever been to (which is a lot), I have only ever seen the bride escorted by her father (and the groom and groomsmen standing already at the front of the church [after having entered through a side door near the front])

Hi Taryn! I agree with FutureMrsD and the others here. Talking to your church & priest should clear this up and from what I have seen in prior weddings as well, the father can normally walk the bride down the aisle. Smiley heart
