Getting married in a different state?

Amanda, on September 22, 2019 at 9:46 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

Hello! My fiancé and I live in New Mexico but will be getting married in Colorado. We weren't sure which state the officiant should be ordained in? Colorado (the place of the wedding) or New Mexico(where we reside)? We might get a friend/family member to do our wedding, but do which state do they go through?

Thanks in advance! Smiley smile

The state you are getting married, as that is where the paperwork needs to be filed.

Officiant and marriage license need to be from the state you are getting married in. Some states don't care who you use as an offciant, as in they don't have to register with the state or county (we got married in IL, live in WI). Officiants dont have to register with the state in IL but check with the county you plan to get married in.

We are doing the same. Live in CA bit getting married in WI. Only thing that I could find is the license had to come from a specific county (where I'm getting married vice where my folks live). My officiant is actually lives in AL.

Every state is different. You should be able to easily find the requirements online. Usually the marriage license and certificate are given by the state you marry in, but you would need to check on specific details to make sure you don’t need to do any filing in your home state as well.

I got married in NJ and live in NY. NJ didn't care where my officiant was ordained.

Colorado doesn't require an ordained minister. Just the bride & groom can sign the marriage license & it's enough. I'm not sure about NM though, I'd call your local county office and see.
