Getting Married "naked"

Mercy, on October 1, 2023 at 7:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 30

We're getting married in the woods and I just love the concept of going super minimalist with my look. No shoes, no makeup and barely any jewelry. I really love this dress so much but I'm worried it might be a bit too much (or rather a bit too little!) for some of the guests lol. What do you think?

Generally this would be a bit too little. Your dress should match the guidelines your guests would have regarding this, especially relatives and maybe friends of the family that were invited. Often it is said that if you have to ask...

We're thinking about having similar guidelines for guests!

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. If you prefer to wear a simple dress and no makeup, which is more common than the internet wants people to believe, then go for it. Tell your guests you have a semi formal/cocktail dress code , which is the default in many social circles and is basically translated as Sunday Best or what you might wear to holiday party. If guests disregard or complain about that, that’s them being rude and has no bearing on you.

I'd really love for our guests to embrace a minimalist look too especially our bridesmaids

You can tell you guests your desired dress code (casual, semi formal/cocktail, formal, black tie) but nothing beyond that. Telling them to wear or avoid specific colors/styles/lengths, to wear or not wear makeup, and other specific requirements is inappropriate because it turns them into props instead of accepting them as they are.

You can decide what the bridesmaids wear and fiancé decides what groomsmen wear but you can’t pick out anything beyond that. If they are not comfortable with those requests/expectations when you ask them to participate, don’t get upset if they decline the role and choose to attend as a guests.

How do you think you would feel at a wedding like that?

I would be thinking how the wedding couple pictures would seem on one's desk in the corporate office. Would it draw too much attention? I'm more traditional.

To me the look is giving beach cover up vibes, and doesn't really match being in the woods per se.

I would be uncomfortable wearing something similar as a bridesmaid if most of the guests were wearing clothes, but that would entirely depend on your crowd. I would respect those that don't want to do that type of attire though.

What are your plans for the men in the wedding party? What will their attire be? If they are in pants and shirts, it might look awkward in photos if you and your wedding party are dressed minimally.

I don’t think the dress is inappropriate, but it doesn’t give a woods vibe to me. It looks like a beach wedding. But beyond that, I don’t see any problem with minimal jewelry and makeup. You should do what you like.

Like others have said, this has a beach vibe. If doing a lakeside or beach oriented wedding, it would fit better, especially if they (un)dressed accordingly. It just seems better to have some degree of continuity with how everyone dresses -- with some level of distinction by the bridal party.

Minimalist is one thing, but since you ask, this looks more like lingerie or a beach cover up than a wedding dress to me. As a guest I’d say nothing of course.

I agree with Rae: mosquitos and cuts on the feet. It will be difficult convincing your partner and guests to join a nkd and afraid themed wedding (the tv show).

I'm not really sure what to say, but maybe have slip dresses for the bridemaids? A green, black, or copper would go really nice with the whole woodland vibe.

Also, maybe consider sandals? It might be a suitable comprimise between walking barefoot (which may be uncomfortable) and wearing shoes

You have absolutely no say over whether your bridesmaids or guests wear shoes or what they do with their hair or makeup. As for the dress, IMO there's a very good chance your bridesmaids would be uncomfortable wearing something comparable. Unfortunately, too many bridesmaids feel they have to go along with the bride's wishes no matter what.

Something minimalist and Grecian inspired would be nice, I'm thinking either gold or brown leather

Do you think you'd feel comfortable going barefoot as a guest or bridesmaid?

Not really: the grass might be wet, there might be rocks, sticks, dirt/mud, possibly bugs. I don't think your guests would really enjoy that
