Getting married on a Thursday???

Alexa, on November 6, 2020 at 1:26 PM Posted in Planning 2 39
Is it weird to get married/have a reception on a Thursday? My fiancé and I’s anniversary date (which we were hoping to get married on) falls on a Thursday the year we are planning on getting married. Ironically, the venue we fell in love with doesn’t do Saturday/Sunday weddings during the month of October (our anniversary month). However, I’m still conflicted on whether or not we should go ahead and book our date! I feel odd not having a traditional day, and I worry our guests will be inconvenienced. I know those who truly want to be there will be, but it’s still a tough decision. Thoughts?

I don't think it's weird, especially since it's a special date to you! There may be some guests who either can't make it/have to leave early (or show up later) due to work or other obligations, but I do think that you'll likely get a good amount of guests to show up.

We are actually getting married on a Thursday for the exact same reason! We really wanted to get married on our dating anniversary because it holds a lot of significance for us (Beyond just the fact that we starting dating then), but also because we didn’t want to have to celebrate two anniversaries each year LOL We are having a destination wedding though, so it wasn’t as big of deal since everyone was going to be traveling and staying a long weekend anyway. Will yours be a destination or a local wedding?

It's a very sweet and romantic idea to want to get married on your anniversary date!

I will say that I've never been to a Thursday wedding, but if I was invited, I would most likely decline because of work. It is unusual that your venue doesn't offer weekend weddings in October, I've never heard of that happening!

Some things to take into consideration before you book your Thursday date:

-Your guests may have a tough time taking off work or leaving early to attend your wedding.

-Some guests may leave a lot earlier than you expected because of work.

-Your guests that have children will have to make adjustments (getting them ready for school, finding a sitter etc). Depending on how easy that is for them, it can be the deciding factor on whether they will attend or not.

I know a lot of people say "If they want to truly be there, they'll find a way", but not everyone's life is the same. Some guests will have no problem making it while others (who truly want to attend) will have a more difficult time.

Our wedding will be on a Thursday, it’ll be exactly 5 years since we first met. The Thursday rate was significantly cheaper too. We’re planning on sending save the dates around 11 months early.

I have never been to a Thursday wedding but would have to depend on work. I was in a Friday wedding and I took off all day Friday. I was late to rehearsal because it was on a Thursday at 5 and im not off till 5. Just think of others like bridal party and family when it comes to time. Maybe an evening wedding would work.

It's not weird. You're giving people enough time to schedule those (or any given) days off so it shouldn't be a problem. Do what works for you.

I'm getting married on a Thursday next year so we could marry on our anniversary day. It was also way cheaper. Our families don't seem to mind they know way far in advanced. Plus its at 6pm so most of them will still be able to work and then just take a long weekend.

That’s too funny!! My fiancé always jokes that if we marry on a different day he won’t remember it since he’s so used to our original anniversary date haha. Our wedding will be local, but we have discussed a destination wedding! Smiley smile

The venue we are looking at is a modern-day barn that is located on a pumpkin/xmas tree farm! Since October is a crazy/busy time due to Halloween, Saturday’s & Sunday’s are left open to the public (which means no weddings take place). You make some great points! Thank you for responding Smiley smile

That’s wonderful! I’ve heard vendors are a lot cheaper when choosing a weekday wedding! That’s definitely a perk! Smiley smile

We are definitely planning on having an evening wedding if we chose the Thursday date! I think that would definitely help more guests to attend. Smiley smile

My husband and I had our minimony on a Tuesday (our anniversary date as well) and no one complained. We didn't start the ceremony until 5:30 that way everyone would already be off.

I think it will depend if most of your guests are local or not. If they're local, then having a Thursday evening wedding should work out very well! But if you have a significant number of guests who would have to travel from out of town, then I'd expect more declines for a Thursday date

How nice! Yes, we are definitely leaning towards a later ceremony if we choose that day!
