Getting out of a contract

Michelle, on December 2, 2017 at 12:55 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

So I booked a dj and gave a $100 deposit, which I will lose and I'm fine with that. My godmother is gifting us the dj but she knows someone so we now have a new dj. According to my contract, I have to send a "certified letter" at least 4 weeks before my date as to not owe him the remaining balance. I'm not sure what a "certified letter" is or what to even put on it. Can anyone offer advice or has been through something similar and can help me? TIA Smiley smile

Certified is how it's sent. You put in writing that his services are not needed then go to your local post office and they can assist with the certified part. I believe you may also receive a tracker number so you know when your letter is received

Do I have to specify why I'm not using him or just a general "your services are no longer needed"?

Certified mail records the sending & delivery of a letter. You can take your sealed letter to the post office and tell them you want to send it Certified Mail. Online it says it's $3.35

I would just be honest in your letter esp if he didn't "do" anything ...

    Dear Mr/Mrs. LastName:

This letter is to notify you that I would like to cancel DJ services for my wedding on MM/DD/YYYY. Thank you for taking the time to meet with us, but we have decided to go with another vendor. I understand that my $100.00 deposit is non-refundable. As required by our contract, this notification is more than four weeks prior to the event and so no additional payments will be required.

Thank you, in advance, for your attention to this matter.

    Sincerely,

    You

    Janel's answer is perfect.

As an aside, I'd meet with the person she knows and make sure they are what you had in mind....

Yes, we actually met with the new dj yesterday and we loved him! My godmother gave us the option and we decided with the new dj!

Even though you are not required, I would send the original vendor an email with copy of the letter. Sometimes certified mail can take weeks (this is what happened to 900 Dreamer applications!!!). It is only courtesy, someone else may be looking to book the guy.

I didn't think of that, I'll do that too! Thank you!

You can also pay to have him sign confirming he received it. I have to send certified letters almost daily for work and the "difficult" ones we also make sure they sign confirming. Might want to add that for documentation purposes.

If you send an emailed copy, do it after you mail the certified letter so you can include the tracking number in your email.
