Getting the enthusiasm back after having to postpone in 2020

Alycia, on January 29, 2021 at 1:14 AM Posted in Planning 0 6

Our original wedding date was July 4, 2020. My mom passed away suddenly at the end of 2019. We postponed until July 4, 2021. Now the wedding is coming in 6 months and I can't get the enthusiasm back when it comes to planning. Because of covid, I've trimmed the guestlist way down and canceled some of the special features we were going to have at the ceremony and reception. I still want it to be special. I just can't get interested in finishing the planning. Does anyone have any suggestions to make planning fun and exciting again?

Definitely adjust it to how you want it. Have you and your FH considered eloping?

Of course if it's not what you want then don't consider it. I only ask bc many may not want a wedding after a sudden loss.

The loss was in 2019. It has been over a year, so my family is definitely ready. Most of the deposits were made while planning in 2019. All of my vendors were wonderful about postponing the date for a year later. (Now set for July 2021). We definitely want a real wedding. I just can't get the exciting feelings back that I had while planning in 2019.

Be gentle with yourself- you've been through a lot!

Try to sort the things you need to do into stuff that *does* excite you, stuff that bores you, and stuff that's somewhere in between. Try to see if your FH will take any of the "meh" stuff - maybe he is interested in it! Balance your to do list so that you have some "chores" and some "fun".

    Eventually, it will come back!

Protect your peace and take your time. You’ve survived a lot and it’s normal to experience angst and perhaps sadness as well, about planning again

I'm also originally a July 2020 bride (now July 2021 hopefully).

I lost a lot of enthusiasm once we postponed in May but fairly recently I've been getting a back in the spirit a little. I recently bought a cricut and started working on the DIY wedding projects that I had put off. I find working on it to be fun and I get to work on my wedding. It also helps keep me from stressing (as much) on the covid related uncertainties of the next 6 months.
I wouldn't suggest getting a cricut (they're expensive) but maybe there's some DIY project you can do that will help you feel like you're working towards your wedding somehow?
