Getting the Food to the Reception

Before we were even engaged, my FH and I decided we wanted chicken fingers, mashed potatoes, and tons of gravy at our wedding. None of the caterers in the area would do that for us, so we're going to order party platters from a local chicken restaurant. The problem is that they don't deliver. The place is 30 min away from our venue, so that's at least an hour of driving. I want the food to be as fresh as possible, so I don't want to pick it up before the ceremony. We did hire servers for when the food arrives, but I can't think of a good way to get the food there! It will either have to sit a while under heat lamps, or I'll have to ask someone to go pick it up. I'm worried that could seem offensive.

Has anyone else dealt with getting your own food? Or does anyone have ideas for ways to pick it up?

@ELK you bring a good point! If I got "dressed up", drove out there, drug FH along against his will, brought a nice gift, and was served bacteria infested fast-food, I would be severely disappointed

In all fairness, Andreya... Chicken, gravy, veggies, salad and potatoes do NOT make a bad meal. In fact, it can be downright yummy! I just sincerely worry about driving fast food take-out chicken in paper bags. I think a lot could go wrong and it will just be icky by the time it is served.

I don't even like to bring fast food home to my house and that's only a few minutes away. It starts off in bad enough shape just by being fast food, and it doesn't hold up well.

My caterer doesn't have chicken fingers on any of the wedding menus; however, we asked and they said of course they could make them for the kids. It doesn't make any sense that you can't get a real caterer to make any chicken fingers on-site or transported in a better way.

ETA: I think the food truck idea sounds better.

I'm not going to read all the comments, I just wanted to say that I am now definitely going to eat chicken fingers today.

Have you never brought take out home in less than 15 minutes and found it already too cold to eat? We're just trying to help.

A food truck sounds like a solid solution.

@hilaryetta...now I want a gravy fountain. Just for the kitchen for every day.

One of my venues does a 'man cave' station, with chicken wings and fingers, a giant hero sandwich, jalapeno poppers and kegerator of beer. I think it's brilliant. As PART of the cocktail hour.

Keep looking for caterers. I know for a fact that the premier catering company in Lexington, KY (Season's) has a chicken fingers station and mash potato bar station offering on their catering menu. Go to a bridal show and find more caterers because that's a really easy menu.

This is a BAD IDEA. Even with the delivery, you're not going to be able to keep your food warmed properly and the food is going to be a soggy, semi-cold mess. It sounds good in theory, but this is one of those things you find a compromise for.

I would look for another option - schlepping over an hour for fast food that will be soggy, cold, and old doesn't seem like a good option. Maybe look into a local BBQ place around where they can do chicken and mashed potatoes!

Oh geez... she's serving chips and salsa at cocktail hour too? Is this all to compensate for the open premium bar?

Have a little less alcohol and serve your guests some real food!

Having party platters for a wedding, especially when the place won't deliver and is 30 minutes away just sounds like a nightmare. No guest should be asked to leave and go get the party platters of fried chicken which WILL be soggy once arrived. Even if they will leave with a happy face and say "oh anything for you", trust me they will NOT be happy on the inside.

Hire a food truck at the very LEAST or find a caterer that will cater to your childlike food choices.

Hire someone to pick it up. Wedding planners might be able to help.

I think you can totally find a vendor in your area. Here's some ideas on how:

market it as CHICKEN. Just chicken. Not chicken tenders. Chicken. Make it fried, make it battered, whatever. The mashed potatoes and gravy should be easy. Maybe a different type of gravy. Check the picture I attached.

This will still be the chicken/mashed potatoes but with more of a wedding look!

If I got dressed up, purchased a gift, and attended your nuptials only to find out that the dinner being served is no different than a meal I could get at a KFC, and not just a KFC style meal, but one that is likely to be soggy and nasty as it languishes under heat lamps, I would leave after the vows with my gift. This is perhaps one of the tackiest wedding meals I have ever heard of. What a way to say thank you to your guests: here are some old ass mashed potatoes, some soggy AF fried chicken tenders, and lumpy curdled gravy. Who the fuck is going to want to do anything after such a heavy and gross meal? Just no. A universe of no. This is a wedding, for fuck's sake, not a child's birthday party. Seriously. Omg. I just can't even with this.
