Getting the marriage certificate myself

Erykah_Roberts, on February 16, 2021 at 9:57 AM Posted in Married Life 1 17
So I have 30 days until I get married, but soon I will be getting the marriage license. I’ve read and talked to people on what you do after the ceremony (sign the license & have the officiant send it back to the courthouse). Well since the mail system sucks lately, I don’t want to rely on the officiant to mail it and wait for it for a long time. I plan to sign it and take it with me to take it back myself so I can get it back right away (according to what the office said I can do). Ima want to be ready to have it & change my name! Haha does it sound like I’m rushing? A couple were wondering why the rush? But I mean why I gotta wait?! It’s exciting! And I want to get to the process of changing my name.

Are you not going on a honeymoon? Don’t you want to just hang out with your new husband and be done running wedding errands for a while lol. Relax and enjoy and let the officiant take care of it. It really doesn’t take long and you can start using your married name right away anyways. Changing your name is a long tedious process and I would NOT have wanted to start doing it right after getting married. I didn’t start it for a couple months it’s not a big deal. You can still change your name on all your social media and stuff if you want.

Just know that not all counties with automatically file it and give you a certificate even if you are dropping it off. My city hall allows you to drop it off in person but the processing time for filing is the same as if you mail it in. You don’t immediately get a marriage certificate.

Our clerks office won't allow you to pick up your official marriage license until 10 days after they receive it. So even if you drop it off on your own, you likely won't get it back for several days. I would just let your officiant mail it off and relax, post wedding.

I don't think it will make much of a difference

Our honeymoon won’t be until later in the summer, I wasn’t gonna rush into getting my name changed, just to get the certificate itself lol. I know that will take a bit of time & I will enjoy it. I just want the paper so I don’t have to wait months as I read on here that people had to do. Just don’t want to.

It probably has a lot to do with where you live. I know by me marriage certificate is back in about 2 weeks. The social security card has been taking closer to months from what I hear.

I haven’t heard anyone’s taking that long. Our officiant sent ours via USPS. We went in our honeymoon. The week after we got back we went & picked up the certified copy. I had all of my paperwork and my name changed in less than 2 months.

I wanted mine ASAP as well because you cant prove youre married without it. If you’re combining insurance plans you need it and you need it for almost every step of changing your name. I sent mine in last April during Covid and it came back about a week later, but I definitely feel like the mail system has been so awful lately that I would bring it to the office and pick up if possible so you know the mail didn't lose it

I agree that is a possibility! It took forever for my invitations to be sent out and to receive mail. I understand some offices will still need time for it to process but still some time is better than months of waiting if I even get It😂

Yea I don’t think the name change will take too long because I don’t have much to really do but I’ve heard on here because COVID effected the mail system. Yea I prefer to pick it up than wait for the mail. I just feel responsible haha but maybe I am rushing, oh well. It’s our decision & we are waiting for the honeymoon so why not?

Prolly not but it’s still exciting! I’m just expressing my thoughts but overall I just want it ASAP and I don’t find any harm in wanting it.

I did the same. Well I actually mailed it in the next day, and got my certificate back within 2 weeks. I didn’t want to wait either! I’d rather get all the wedding stuff done and out of the way instead of doing it months down the line

Exactly. I even had a couple people tell me they never received their invitation so I dont trust the mail right now, only mail it if you can track it via USPS

So I actually spoke with my venue & the officiant doesn’t mail the certificate anyways. We gotta take it & pick it up so this whole post was unnecessary😂

I took my marriage license back to the courthouse myself and it's a good thing I did. The lady working in the office couldn't read our officiant's information so I had to call him to make sure the information about him that we needed was correct. I was also told it was a good thing I didn't mail it in b/c it would've been rejected if I had b/c they couldn't read his handwriting clearly.

And there is no reason to wait on changing your name unless you want to. My husband and I got married on a Saturday, I took our license back to the courthouse Monday, got our certified copies and our copy of our license & went to the Social Security office the same day to legally change my name (they gave me a letter with my new legal name on it so I could take it to the DMV 48 hours later to get my license). When I went back to work Tuesday I changed my name through my company; i.e. my company email and through HR, and I added my husband to my health insurance plan. Wednesday (48 hrs after legally changing my name thorough social security), I went to the DMV to change my license because I got off of work early. On Friday my new social security card came in the mail. In less than a week after our wedding my name was legally changed, lol Smiley xd ...I wasn't able to change my name on our bank accounts and such until a week later on my day off.
