Ghost orchid replica - impossible?

Jeni, on February 19, 2013 at 5:55 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 3

Hello excited people!

So this is my query...

I 've absolutely fallen in love with the ghost orchid. Check it out. You will love it too! Okay, maybe don't though cause then you'll be in my boat. : |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dendrophylax_lindenii

This flower is gorgeous, but unfortunately, also seemingly unattainable. It is endangered.

I see that you can grow them, which for me is not an option. I've thought to ask growers for their flowers, but considering the love and time that goes into this process I highly doubt my money will satisfy them. They're going to want to keep their flowers.

I don't see this flower available in silk.

Are there any shops/artists that can create a custom silk flower? Would a new mold be required to do this and so dubbing it impractical?

Does anybody have any ideas on how to achieve this?

Any direction I should turn toward?

I really appreciate any help!

Thank you!

Jeni

You could try Michaels or Hobby Lobby (google them if you aren't familiar with them) if you want to make them yourself. Also, there is this place in my hometown in NH that grows and sells orchids (dozens of different types). The place is called http://ccorchids.com/. They will ship them if the need to. I don't know if they have what you are looking for (orchids are my favorite flower, but I haven't searched for the ghost orchid before), but you can always look. They are beautiful flowers, and I hope you can find them. www.silkflowers.com could be a way to find silk flowers, but I don't think they do ghost orchids. Good luck!

If they are endangered, as I'm sure you've guessed, you are going to have one hell of a time. Have you looked at lady slipper orchids? They have a closer shape to the ghost and the gilded urchin orchid.... they are more easily obtainable and not as common as some other orchid... Just a suggestion if you cannot get your ghost.

Good luck & hope you find it!

I haven't seen this flower in a silk, but it is beautiful. Just a simple idea: Print out photos of the flower on velum, wrap them around glass jars or vases and stick a candle inside. The image will glow, so you can incorporate them into your decor.
