Happily Ever Mrs. H, on August 17, 2018 at 10:53 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 18

I've posted about this before, but I wanted to give an update and ask for more advice.

I hired a makeup artist last November and sent her the deposit. Since my wedding is 48 days away, I wanted to contact her and confirm everything with her. That was on Monday morning and I have not received a response from her. I follow her on Instagram and maybe this has nothing to do with her getting back to me, but she's posted twice on there after I reached out to her. I double-checked the email address with the one on her website, and my MOH even attempted to get a hold of her yesterday by calling her - NA, but left a voicemail. I am not sure what to think as she has nothing but 5-star reviews on TheKnot, where I found her. Her most recent reviews were from October last year, so that's somewhat recent.

I have this sinking feeling that she took my deposit and is ghosting me because she doesn't want to do it? I told her from the start that I only wanted makeup done for my bridesmaids and my mother, that I was doing my own, and typically MUAs get the most band for their buck on the brides, so maybe she felt it wasn't worth it? Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions.

However, this is quite odd and frustratingly hypocritical - she recently published on her IG Stories a court-ordered check from a client who never paid her. She more or less warned that this is what happens when you don't pay her: you get sued. Not to mention, she posted the girl's name. I thought that was so off-putting and unprofessional. Yes, this unfortunately happens, but why post this on your professional page? BUT IT'S OK FOR YOU TO TAKE A CLIENT'S DEPOSIT AND GHOST THEM? Ugh.

I told my photographer what happened and asked him if he knew anyone he could recommend, so I looked over a few others this morning and contacted them, letting them know what happened. One already responded and told me that she's available for my wedding day.

Should I book with her, or wait a few more days until Monday and then book with her, just in case?

What does your contract say about canceling? I don’t think you can assume she’s ghosted you if it’s only been 72 hours. A lot of wedding vendors, especially hairstylists, don’t work on Monday.

Also, for what it’s worth, there are programs out there that allow you to preset posts to social media so she may not have actually actively posted in the last few days.

If your comfortable with losing your deposit and are uncomfortable and nervous about whether or not you will have an artist for your wedding then move forward with another person. I would be upset if there was lack of communication and unprofessional as well. Plus I don’t want to still be stressing so close to my wedding day.

I just read your previous post. How long ago did you try to contact her initially and no response?

Mine takes up to a week to get back to me. Annoying yes but she does have career and family and is very busy with both.

It's been over 96 hours (4 days). When I originally inquired about her services, she responded the same day.

Dont worry then i just started speaking to one about a trial and wedding day makeup and she takes a couple days to respond as well. Sometimes shes quick and reaponds right away sometimes it takes forever and takes days. Id give it a few more days then let her know how you feel. Id also never again pay without a contract

That is a big red flag!! I would start looking for a new MUA and look through your correspondence with this one. save any emails or texts where you discussed the services that you want and the deposit. Give her a bit more time to email you back. If she doesn't respond soon reply again and tell her that you are uncomfortable with your arrangement. It is unfair of her to ask for a deposit without a contract.

Do you have a phone number for her? I would definitely try to get one for her and give her a call directly.

Yeah, I'm thinking that if I don't hear back in a week's time, then I am going to contact her again and tell her this and that I have researched other options and have found a few others available my wedding day.

The petty part of me would want to comment on her lawsuit picture and say something like, "oh so this is what I'm going to have to do to get my deposit back from you , huh?"

Yikes, no contract is difficult. I had a contract and my own coordinator forgot my wedding. People can just be incompetent unfortunately. With glowing reviews. Whatever you do don't stop calling, email, message her on IG any way to communicate with her. Us every avenue she is. At the least if you don't want to deal with her you should request your deposit back since she isn't communicating and your wedding is so close. Give her 24-48 hours to respond.

As a makeup artist myself, I would not go with her. Find someone new, that’s not acceptable. I am a super busy person but I’d NEVER ignore a client especially one that has already paid a deposit. Sorry that happened & hope you find someone!

Hahahahahaha I sooooo would love to do this if someone did this to me. I find it ridiculous vendors are sometimes not responsive. I get they are busy and it’s high wedding season but cmon we aren’t in the business so we don’t know this. Nor are we comforted by just waiting. Sending a quick “got your email will look at it in detail and respond soon” is not that hard.

The posting of the settlement check and the brides name. That would be enough to tell me, I am not dealing with a customer service professional. Doesn't matter when it was posted. Petty people stay petty... and it won't be any different with you. Sorry this is happening. Never pay in cash, and without a contract to back you up. Good luck and congratulations on your special day!
