Giant yard games for outdoor reception?

Hi guys!

I'm having an outdoor BBQ reception that will be pretty casual. Someone gave me the idea of having giant jenga at my reception, which got me looking into other game ideas as well. I found a giant yahtzee game on Etsy, giant tic-tac-toe, and of course, corn hole.

Do you think any guests would even pay attention to these games? Do you have any yard game ideas? This reception will be mostly family and children, so I just want to make sure everyone has fun.

I say do it. It sounds like it would fit in with your wedding and your crowd. We are doing lawn games. Giant jenga, connect 4, and tic tac toe. We are also putting our monogram on our corn hole and got personalized bags with team bride and team groom on them. No one here actually knows your crowd but it sounds like it would be a good idea for you.

This is an idea I wanted to do but I'm not sure I want to go through the trouble of finding one to buy or having to make it haha

I hope you have an air conditioned tent as @Katie mentioned twice and you have avoided clarifying. You're getting married in July...

@Jessica thank you! I'm going to have them! Good point about people not knowing my crowd!

@Vicki I have clarified this before and am not "avoiding" it. Everyone just assumes that I haven't thought to have an air conditioned tent. If I was questioning as to whether or not I should have air conditioning, I may have posted that question. I chose a July wedding knowing what the weather would be like and knowing what I had to do. I don't understand why you are so concerned with that when it's not what this post is about.

    Thanks, though!

We're doing a giant jenga for our "guest book". I'm pretty stoked about it. Plus we can use it after, so that's a huge plus. We regularly play games like that at family gatherings, so I'll get to see it over and over again.

I think the reason Katie and Vicki asked (at least twice) is because you, OP, don't seem concerned at all about ensuring your guests' safety and comfort. SLC can be HOT in July, and without an air-conditioned area where these games will be played, you are potentially risking the health of your guests by expecting them to be playing games outside. Heat stroke, anyone?

@EC17 how do I not seem concerned? I've never said anything about not having air conditioning. There will be an air conditioned tent AND the option to be inside (which is also air conditioned). I know Utah weather, lived here my whole life. I asked people's opinions on games, I never said I'm locking all my guests in 90 degree weather with no a/c where they will be forced to play games until the heat kills them.

    I say do it!

If people don't want to play games outside, they won't play games outside. If they want to, they will!

*rolls eyes* If someone is planning an outdoor wedding, chances are very, very good that they have thought about and planned for the weather. It's really unnecessary to start an aggressive witch hunt every single time someone says the word "outdoor."

We just went to an outdoor wedding at a barn and they had some outdoor games. The guys ended up playing the games the whole time, leaving their SO or dates alone.. (fine with us due to be so close to the other girls). This caused there not to be alot of dancing but if thats your feel for the wedding go for it!! It was still such a beautiful wedding, however we wish things weren't so seperate

@lyla how is asking if there's air conditioning for an outdoor wedding aggressive? OP didn't answer Katie's question twice.

I went to one with giant Jenga. People played and it was fun but I thought it took away from the dancing and wedding feel. It all depends on the style you're going for!

    Thank you lyla!

@Vicki she didn't ask if my tent was air conditioned, by the way. She asked if my air conditioned tent had enough room. She already assumed it was air conditioned. And I did answer her question if you go back and look.

Games are super fun! Ironic advice: don't take people on wedding forums too seriously. You know your guests best.

We are having a jenga guestbook, DIY cornhole, DIY kan jam, DIY yardzee, and possibly bocce. We're mostly using these before the wedding begins (outdoor ceremony) and during our tented cocktail hour. We'll have them out during the indoor reception, but I think people will stay indoors for dancing.

We honestly don't care if anyone plays or not, we're using them to create an atmosphere and because we think they're fun. They're for US! We also like to have summer BBQs and will use them again with our friends in the future.

Go with your gut and have a great wedding!
