Gift arrived broken- ettiquete?

Fiona, on February 4, 2016 at 10:15 AM Posted in Married Life 0 25

Hey y'all,

I got a late gift in the mail yesterday from someone who was unable to attend our wedding. I'm about to write their thank you note. The gift was a beautiful ceramic dish that matched the set we've been getting. Unfortunately, it was broken in half Smiley sad

Do I mention that to them? Do I go to Belk and see if they'll replace it? There's no gift receipt, but the barcode sticker is till on the dish.

Thoughts?

I would go and see if you can replace it. I would not mention it to the gift giver.

Yeah, most places are good about that. Did Belk ship it to you?? or did the guest purchase and ship themselves?

If it was something off your registry, they should definitely replace it. But even if it wasn't, I would bring in the entire package to show when it was mailed to you and that it is broken. I'd be shocked if they didn't replace it.

Ehh.. that might change things. They must not have packaged it properly. That stinks. I'd give it a shot though.

Minnemiska- How would it be there fault that her guest didn't package and ship it properly?

It wasn't on my registry, but it's part of a set we've been getting.

Thank you ladies, I'll write the thank you note as normal, and pay a visit to Belk this weekend :-)

@Kathryn, I didn't see her comment that the guest shipped it. I assumed the store did.

Ya, if they shipped it they would 100% have to replace!

Yeah I would talk to Belk first, if you have any issues then maybe bring it up with your friend because they might have the receipt. I'm sure they would replace it for you though.

Talk to Belk first. If they won't replace it, then I would call your friend and explain to her what happened and see if perhaps she has the receipt she can send you.

If worse comes to worse, you could always ask your friend if they purchased insurance when they shipped. I know it's kind of awkward to be like "uhhh hey your gift arrived broken", but hopefully that would cover the cost if it broke during shipment.

I would try most places will let you exchange without receipt just not return

If it came off your registry, the store should replace it at no cost (I just went through the same thing where four dinner plates were broken and I called Bloomingdales and they mailed me four more without a second question). Good luck!!

I had this happen and was wondering the same thing -it came from Etsy, from our registry. I didn't know if I should reach out to the seller or if it should come from the person who bought it. Or if I should just suck it up and enjoy the one coaster out of 4 that arrived intact. :-/

Guests mean well, but do silly things! She should've just bought it online and had the store ship it to you! Plus, shipping items yourself is a pain and expensive!... I dread going to the post office!!

I personally wouldn't go to the store about it, I find that unethical. I would probably just stuck it up. But you could try contacting the shipper to place a claim or ask the giver if they bought insurance when they shipped it. It isn't the store's fault that the giver packaged and shipped the fragile item incorrectly; the store shouldn't have to pay for the giver's mistake.

I'd try to replace it, why just toss it? Someone spent their money on that and expects you to enjoy it.
