Hey y'all,

I got a late gift in the mail yesterday from someone who was unable to attend our wedding. I'm about to write their thank you note. The gift was a beautiful ceramic dish that matched the set we've been getting. Unfortunately, it was broken in half Smiley sad

Do I mention that to them? Do I go to Belk and see if they'll replace it? There's no gift receipt, but the barcode sticker is till on the dish.

Thoughts?

You should definitely be able to replace it. I ordered a dish from Kohls for my friend's bridal shower and it came broken - TWICE. They replaced it no problem both times. Don't mention it to the gift giver.

@Sara Yes I get that someone spent their money on it. But it isn't the store's responsibility to replace it, if they didn't break it. Outside of purchasing a replacement for yourself, I think tossing it and moving on is the best option. I wouldn't want to upset the giver by telling them it was broken in shipment. That could possibly lead to the giver feeling responsible to purchase a replacement.

@natalie very true, it isn't the stores problem.

I'm pretty sure all packages come with at least $50 'insurance' in case something happens. Check into that!

Who would have ever thought that returning a broken gift would be so controversial?! @natalie, how do you know that the gift giver didn't accidentally purchase a defective product? And that it broke not because it was poorly packaged for shipping, but because it was prone to breaking already? Regardless, it is in the store's best interest to replace it, because it will keep Mrs. Faith and her friends coming back to buy more in the future. Any well run business would likely have contingencies in their budget for damaged product.

@minnemiska I don't know for sure that the giver didn't buy a broken dish. But I assumed that the giver would check before sending it. Yes the store will likely replace the item, because they want to keep customers happy. It won't put them out of business, they price the product high enough to cover some getting broken. But I still think it is unethical to expect a store to replace something which I believe was purchased intact and broken after purchase. If the op had received the dish unbroken but then dropped it, would people suggest taking it back to the store. I don't think they would because it isn't the store's responsibility to keep a fragile item from breaking after it was purchased outside of typical use.
