Gift for Videographer

tkringle, on June 2, 2009 at 4:04 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 6

A mutual friend of ours is starting his own video business and asked to tape our wedding so he can use it for future promotions. He said that he will do it for free because he needs to have something to give to future clients.

Is it appropriate to get him a gift? If so, what!?

I was thinking of getting him a $100 gift card but I wasn't sure if that was appropriate.

Any and all thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Gidt cards are always nice, but something hand picked is always nicer! As long as you know the person well enough to pick out something you know they'll love, with a thank-you card ofcourse!

It depends on the details of your friendship. When I was starting out I would do friends weddings for free or as a wedding gift. When I offered to do the photography for free I didn't expect anything other than the use of the pictures for my portfolio. I gave my close friends a DVD of all of their pictures so they could print the pictures they wanted and I printed a couple of pictures for them that I really liked. Not so close friends got the photography service for free and the pictures at cost.

The pictures and experience that I got were invaluable.

I did receive a gift card to a restaurant from one insistant friend. I used it to go out to dinner with them.

As a videographer and photographer the friend will be making a considerable sum on your wedding. Allowing him to use your wedding is a considerable gift to him in the long run. Giving an additional gift is nice but probably would not be necessary. Myself, I would not take it except to maybe purchase the materials to present you your finished weding videos. Thanks for the opprotunity to speak.

Echoing what's already been said: It depends on your relationship with him.

If you happen to know him but are not really close, like chat on the phone, hang out together friends, a gift/tip is definitely appropriate. Let's face it, he's starting out, probably struggling to break into a really tough business...and we're in a recession. Cash is always appreciated. Did he shoot with mini-dv (3 chip) camera? He invested money in the tapes to film the wedding. Did he have to pay for parking or incur any other expenses to document your event? Those are things I would take into consideration. Though he offered to do it for the experience, it's always a nice gesture to thank someone with a gift.

Now if you're close friends, he may not even accept any money from you. If you really want this person to have your generous token of appreciation, mail them a gift card [instead of handing it to them face to face]. It can be embarrassing to take something out of your hand and he may decline.
