Gift Registry

Morgan, on October 25, 2017 at 5:28 PM Posted in Registry 0 18

What are some ideas for gift registries. My fiancé and I have already been living together for 4 years and pretty much already have everything we need. We are currently living in a 500 square foot apartment until we can hopefully buy a home after the wedding so there isn't much space.

@sooziep123 I don't want to sound tacky or anything but money would be better. We have nowhere to put anything since we're living in such a tiny place right now

We live in an appt about the same size. We still chose to upgrade several items and ask for some of the more traditional appliances (mixer, blender, etc.). Most of our gifts will remain in storage until after we move to a larger place. We decided we would ask for what we liked and would use. The storage situation is not ideal but it's temporary.

We have lived together for 3 years and like you guys, had pretty much everything we needed. We put a lot of things we just wanted or wanted to upgrade on our registry and got lots of cash anyways. People know!

ETA just make a small registry and people will get the idea.

I would create a small registry that includes upgrades for things you already have (stored in the space you currently have available).

My husband and I lived together for 5 years before getting married and we both lived on our own for many, many years so needless to say, we had a lot when we joined households. We still found plenty to register for: new towels, better coffee maker, BBQ attachments, new silverware, etc. We also registered for a Sonos sound bar and wireless speaker, which my coworkers generously surprised us with. I registered on Amazon which was so easy. My friends and family loved it since most of them have Prime. It gave us the opportunity to register for a great variety of things, including a popcorn seasoning set and matching Sanford and Son "You Big Dummy" T-shirt's (which my husband's Godson got us). If you get things you decide you don't want, it's very easy to return and your guest won't know. Even though I was registered, it was only used for shower gifts. Everyone ended up giving us checks as wedding gifts.

We live in a smaller apartment as well. We chose to upgrade knives (I cook and bake a lot so this was amazing), upgrade our bowl and dish set (it was mismatched and chipped from college), an upgraded blender, upgraded sheet set (oh yes it's worth it!), and various organizational furniture items.

If you really want cash do a small registry of upgrades and don't update it after your shower. Most people will get the hint

Most of our stuff is upgrades as well.

FILs have cleared a space in their basement to keep some of our bigger things until we move into our own home (currently renting a tiny house, not much bigger than you 500 sq ft!)

Like others have said, just do a small registry with a few upgrades or things you really want, and once it's all bought, everyone else will probably just write you a check or give cash!

You can also put links to charities that you care about on your Zola registry, say "we have very limited space but if you feel inclined to send us a gift please consider donating to a cause we care about"

If you'd honestly just prefer money, have a small registry with just upgrades like others have mentioned. Consider also that if you move, you'll have to furnish that space and many registries have a completion discount after your wedding--so if you register for a new mattress at Macy's but it is not purchased, it will be available to you at a discount.

We mostly did upgrades and as they arrived we got rid of the older stuff. There were only a few additional items (some of them will be living at my parents' house for a while).

Not trying to re-start the Honeyfund debate, but we did also have some honeymoon activities on there (oh the horror!!!!!!). Where we took our honeymoon the vendors wanted cash, so a gift certificate wasn't an option, and I was also nervous about a hurricane cancelling our honeymoon which would make any certificates worthless. I talked to the more conservative members of my family before setting up a HF to gauge their reaction and it was far more positive than I expected (these are honest, blunt people). Ultimately, you know your guests best. We had a bunch who truly preferred to gift experiences over things and loved it, and if anyone felt so insulted by its existence that they didn't want to send a gift that's totally fine with us. Just don't ask about it on here.

We have been living together for a few years as well. We bought a home last year and already have most things we could ever need. We are upgrading our sheets, bath towels, kitchen towels, plates/dishes, silverware, glassware, a new toaster, new baking sheets, new tupperware....

Trust me, just because you "have everything" already, you can still find things to put on a registry.

Please at least make a small one. If people don't want to buy anything off of it they will likely give you a check or cash but you should not ever just out-right ask for money.

I have the same problem. I've been told by multiple very well-meaning people that I "didn't put anything on my registry," I did--I made 2--Amazon & Target. I included things I actually need to upgrade/replace as we had almost no money when we first moved in together. Seriously--why can't people take the hint & just buy us what we actually need like a new timer, peeler, and various other small things? It's supposed to be for the person you're giving the gift to, right? After speaking to one aunt-to-be, I added expensive sheets, a Roomba, and a Ninja Coffee Bar which I then removed because we will never ever use it...frustrating.
