Gifts for courthouse weddings?

Halle, on July 20, 2019 at 8:33 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 21
Hey guys I think I’m seriously considering canceling my wedding and getting married at the courthouse . I plan on still having a photographer still wearing my dress and still havin flowers . I just really don’t think I want to continue spending so much money on something that I haven’t felt supported about since the beginning . I just want to focus on my future marriage and having a special moment with my future husband . Instead of paying $2300 plus feeding people that are not really even supporting me . Anyway I still want the gifts etc but I don’t feel like anyone is going to get gifts for people they didn’t go to the wedding for . Has anyone else gotten around this when they had a courthouse wedding ?

So this statement contradicts itself. You want to get married in a court house cause you don think people are supporting you. But you want gifts to help you start off your new life. From
the people who are not supporting you??! The idea of a gift is to help support you. You can’t get married in a court house and ask for gifts. That pretty rude.

Use the $2300 you are saving and buy yourself the gifts...

“I don’t want to host any guests, but I want people to give me gifts.” Does that sound okay to you? Your last concern, even if throwing a $100k wedding, should be gifts.

Two of my best friends had a courthouse wedding. The parents wanted to still be involved so they threw an engagement party for them. That was what people brought gifts to instead. The couple didn't get a lot (mainly some cards), but that might be a way to have a small celebration.

I haven't sent anyone gifts if I wasn't invited to the wedding. I have sent friends gifts for engagements though. Although we did have a wedding, we got gifts from people like neighbors, coworkers and bosses who were never invited to the wedding. You will likely get some gifts still. Do what works best for you and your FH.

Hey listen you have a right to feel how you want. If you have a courthouse wedding maybe have a small party after for close family and friends to celebrate. The party can be at your home or a local restaurant but not a full reception. In that case I would feel it would be okay to expect gifts. Kinda like a house warming... I had a house warming and got gifts but I didn’t expect them but it was nice to get them.

I think if I was a friend of yours and I knew you were getting married I'd still give you a gift out of courtesy and being nice

I'd probably do a card with money if I wasn't invited. But some people won't do anything unless invited.
Could you do a small ceremony and have a simple cake and punch reception?

Yea I’m thinking that’s the least I can do and just have my reception in my church reception hall

Yea it's seems like you might be overwhelmed, and that's definitely fine. Cake and punch is light, easy to plan, has all the important parts of a reception people like.
Just grab a cheese and veggie platter to go with it and call it a day.

You could do a lunch/tea hour for your reception, no one expects a full meal during that hour and you could do some really cute stuff like tea cups and finger sandwiches, really affordable.
You don’t have to spend thousands, have the wedding you can comfortably afford.

Gifts are typically from invited wedding guests, as others said.
