Gladiolus flowers.. Does anyone know anything about them?

Irchykk, on June 17, 2012 at 11:55 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

My mom wants to seriously do the centerpieces... & as much as I dont want her to, she is not really doing anything else for the wedding, so I finally said OK fine..

well she wants to do the centerpieces from Gladiolus flowers, which is fine with me, I do like them... But I dont know too much about them.. Does anyone know will they be OK if she makes them Thursday morning & leaves them in the fridge over night at the Venue?

does anyone have any pictures of maybe centerpieces of these flowers? I am doing slowly my research now online ...

Also, if she does the centerpieces with them.. What about flowers for me & the BMs? I only been to 2 weddings in my life & dont really remember neither one of them good... So I am sooo lost with all this wedding planning.. Thank God for you ladies!!! I would really be lost without WW & all of you.. Thank you

Attached are couple of centerpieces that I saw & kind of like.. thinking of putting submerged lights in the vase though at the bottom

I like them, but they are hard to arrange (look how 'stalky' that third pix is) and they always remind me of funerals.

Celia is reight, glads are used often at funerals. (i worked for a florist) If they are going to keep them in a cooler at the venue, they can't be too cold or they will wilt nor can food be in there with the flowers, same result.

The stalks are thick/block lights so consider that when putting in lights, meaning you may not see the light too well unless the room will be quite dark like in that last pic.

Celia and mrs clark kinda said what I was going to.

They should be fine in a fridge as long as it stays above freezing. As a former florist we would keep glads in the cooler for a week at a time BUT a florist cooler verses a fridge are a little different.

That top picture is VERY hard to recreate but the middle/bottom are typically what you get when you design with Glads.

    Its a nice, non-traditional choice...

By looking at more pics, so I was thinking of getting tall vase on a skinnier side... & putting only 5-7 flowers in each at the most .. at the bottom of the vase put in the submerged lights .. I definitely understand about how bulky they are, but I dont know what else to do or have my mom do.. & I know Gladiolus are late summer flower, which is perfect..

I also have seen them at the funerals, so that did cross my mind too.. but what if we add some other flower to it?? maybe lets say 3 gladiolus & 4 roses? or calla lilies?

Mrs. Clark help please since you worked for a florist & from your previous posts, you are definitely good at this ... :-)

Honestly, glads don't really need filler flowers IMO but you can break up the tall skinny flow with a few others. Either flower you mentioned would work. I just suggest buying supplies to make 1, see how you like it before settling; you may find you don't like the way it looks at all with the smaller flowers. Thats what I did with my bouquets and centerpieces.

They should be fine in the fridge. Glads are actually pretty hardy. The first picture will be trickier to do, since the flowers either have to be trained to not grow straight or you have to wire them. The good thing about glads is that they are a larger flower so you don't need as many as some smaller options. They would also be a great flower for submerged centerpieces. You could cut down the stalks and do shorter centerpieces as well. For bouquets I would do longer bouquets that you hold in the crook of your arm, similar to what is done with calla lilies a lot. Some more:

3rd pick is an idea of what I was talking about with the callas. I think carrying the glads in a similar fashion would look very elegant, and would be easy to do.

My only concern would be that glads are different in that the "flower" portion is much longer than other flowers. Of course, that's a part of their charm :-)

But it also makes it more likely that they will be too tall. The first 3 pics are really nice, but would be exactly in the line of sight.

As far as the funeral connection goes IDK, but roses and carnations are used just as often for funerals so I don't see why glads are labeled funeral flowers. You just gotta think outside the box a little with arranging them ;D

You could also snip off the tops of the stalks instead if you don't want a "spiky" look.

I was thinking of using glads for my centerpieces as well. I found them bulk online for about $2.08 a piece. I wanted a tall but cost effective centerpiece and I think glads will be it. Way better than the $100 and up I’d be paying for the round style of flower arrangement.
