Glassware question for those of you providing your own beer/bar...

Monica SC, on February 22, 2015 at 9:15 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

We are renting a bar and hiring a bartender. We will be serving red and white wine sangria, a few bottles of red and white wine and then beer. I had planned to serve Blue Moon along with some selections from a local brewery (Thomas Creek).

I had really planned to just let people drink right from the bottle, but FH says if we serve Blue Moon then we have to provide glasses and orange slices, and he definitely wants Blue Moon

Are you ladies providing glasses for your beer drinkers? How many glasses would I have to rent for 50 guests since we have no way of washing and reusing?

I am already renting wine glasses for serving the sangria, but though most people would hold onto and reuse those. I got enough for each person 2 have two glasses and not all 50 will even drink the sangria.

Our guests drank right out of the bottles. It worked out just fine.

I have 85 guests, and I rented 100 wine and champagne glasses each. I am instructing people to think "environmentally friendly" and re-use their glasses. Since our beers are in kegs and large bottles (home brew in 22oz bottles), I am getting the "nicer" keg cups from Costco. Honestly, so much cheaper than renting three hundred beer pint glasses.

I really don't want to have to provide orange slices and beer glasses so I'm thinking FH is just going to have to get over it. This is why I prefer he not get involved!

I think you should definitely have oranges if you're serving Blue Moon. The bartender can cut them small enough so they fit in the bottles.

Can you use plastic cups instead of glasses? I've seen lots of wedding bars that use plastic, and as long as they're not red solo cups, it looks fine. I don't think it's an issue to have guests drinking out of bottles though, it's just personal preference.

Bottle is fine, even for Blue Moon. You can squeeze the orange slice in there (but you should have the orange slices). Maybe I'm the only one, but once I leave my drink unattended at any event or party, I won't drink from that glass again, including re-using the glass for another drink.

Beer will be served in bottles. Waaay too much hassle to rent glasses. You can stick an orange wedge into a bottle of Blue Moon, just like a lime into a Corona bottle.

I've had plenty of Blue Moon in my day and I've never heard of putting an orange slice in it. I wonder if it's a regional thing?

Maybe it is Sarah...never even considered that. It's how it's served in SC and how it's served on Florida too where my fiancé is from. I like the wedge idea though.

Sarah, I don't know how you've missed the orange in Blue Moon thing. Their own advertising shows their beer served with an orange, and it's commonly served that way in bars. Same for Shock Top, which is also a Belgian wheat ale. I don't think it's a regional thing.
