Go with a tour group or solo on your honeymoon?!!?

Private User, on August 9, 2014 at 9:05 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 7

We are torn between going with a traveling site (Contiki) which will allow us to see more and explore more or go on our own in one location and have more us time?

I think it really depends on what kind of honeymoon you want. For example if FH and I were to honeymoon in Greece we would do a tour because we don't speak the language and I would prefer someone familiar with the area escort us. We are going to Disney World where I have been 17 times so I didn't need any help. If you are the type to just sit and read/lay on the beach or things like that you can "go it alone".

Have you actually traveled with contiki before? I have not... but from the reviews and descriptions I have heard from people who have I am under the impression that Contiki is mostly a bunch of teenagers who are more interested in getting wasted and hooking up with each other than actually seeing any of the sights. I know everybody is different... but personally that is the least romantic thing I can imagine. If memory serves me I even read an account once where a couple tried to travel together on one of those tours and got split up in their lodging some of the nights bc of guys and girls dorms or whatever.

Of course organized tour vs solo is a different debate... but just wanted to make sure you look into what you might be getting yourself into with Contiki

I would not want to be on a tour or with any group during honeymoon but that's just us. We went to st Bart's and anguilla for our honeymoon and basically kept to ourselves Smiley smile

I've done both. My favorite, though, is traveling without a big tour group, but taking day tours. The site I use for that is www.viator.com. When I went to Italy 2 years ago, I booked all kinds of day tours there - bike tour in Florence, hop-on/hop-off tours in every city, Coliseum tour in Rome, gondola tour in Venice. It was nicer to not have to travel with people, but then tour when we wanted to.

We are both very social so we wouldn't mind taking day trips with others depending on what the trip was.

We're doing Ireland. We had considered doing the bus tours but we don't want to be on anyone else's schedule. We're doing a self drive your. They provide a detailed itinerary and we go as we please. Smiley smile

I had a friend go on Contiki tours and she said it was a bunch of 20 somethings getting drunk, partying and yes, hooking up - not something that I would really want on a honeymoon. Saying that, there do seem to be some good tour groups such as gate 1 and go tours that cater to a group of people who are interested in seeing the sites, taking in the culture etc. Hope that helps!
