“Going Away Outfits”

Dj Tanner, on February 25, 2020 at 5:27 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17
So my mom was telling me in her day they did “going away outfits “which are basically outfits you change into at the end of your wedding as if you were going on vacation. She then showed me pictures of these “going away outfits” that her and my dad wore. I plan on having a ceremony dress and reception dress but I was just curious if anyone has ever heard about the “going away outfits” and if anyone is still doing this old tradition in 2020 lol.

I haven’t seen anyone do that but I think that’s only more so for if you’re literally going on a plane right after I can see people changing into something more comfortable

It was a great tradition back in the day for those who were literally leaving the wedding and going straight to the honeymoon (back when weddings ended earlier than 10pm-12am, haha)

I'm with PPs in that I'm going to get as much use out of that dress as humanly possible and won't be changing until it's time for bed (maybe not even then?)

I’ve heard of it, but I think it’s quite old fashioned and not done these days. Also think it was for times when people actually travelled right after the event.
I agree with PPs - I want to wear my dress as long as possible.

I do have an exit outfit. Only because we are leaving right from the wedding and driving 3 hours to our first honeymoon destination and I did not want to wear my wedding dress in the car for that long! I don't have a reception dress though.

I actually thought about doing this as I think it is a cute idea, originally I wanted to re-create my grandma's going away outfit. However after falling in love with my wedding gown, I am not taking it off until I absolutely have to.

We didn't do this because we were going back to our blocked hotel Saturday evening and didn't leave for our honeymoon until Monday morning.

No, but I did have a white jumpsuit that I changed into for dinner after our wedding (our wedding ended at 5pm). Crazily with the 3,000+ photos we have from that day, I don’t have a single one in that outfit though 😂 I think I was all photo’d out by then

I've only seen that when bride and groom were leaving town right after the reception. But I am changing into the same style dress that my bridesmaids are wearing for an after party!“Going Away Outfits” 1

I have a reception dress but we are not planning on changing into Going Away outfits, however, if we had a wedding that ended earlier in the day I would SO do it. It's old fashioned but will always remind me of "Father of the Bride" when they are leaving the reception for the airport and he finally has that moment with his daughter. Smiley cry

If I was having this type of wedding I would definitely have one. It is for traveling and greeting the world as a Mrs.

I wore my mermaid dress and my hubby wore his suit for an hour and a half drive to Orlando.

This is OLD SCHOOL, like when people had a daytime wedding and changed into an outfit that they hopped in the car with their suitcase with and went directly to an airport and got on a plane to go on their honeymoon. My parents did this, but we are not considering it at all.

If you are planning to take photos of you pre-plane going on your honeymoon it could be cute. Kinda like first day of school outfits/pictures for kids.

I am doing a going away outfit/ exit dress! I did not want to cram my giant poofy wedding dress (see below) into a car. I put together a vintage ensemble that is definitely reminiscent of the days when the going away dress was more common.
