Going somewhere else to take photos between ceremony and reception?

Brynne, on April 26, 2023 at 10:09 PM Posted in Planning 0 8
Hi everyone! I appreciate your advice in advance Smiley smile

My fiancé and I are planning a small, destination wedding outside of Denver, Colorado at a VRBO. We can have our ceremony at our VRBO, but my FH wants to have pictures somewhere really picturesque. We thought about having our ceremony somewhere nearby but we’re having some trouble finding somewhere that will let us have “just a ceremony” at their location without the reception. (Totally valid — they need to make their money!)
My question: would it be weird to have our ceremony at our venue, go somewhere nearby with pretty views to take pictures (with our family and friends, most likely), and then come back to the reception?

Let me know what you think! Thanks!

Does the VRBO host know you're doing a wedding at their listing? A lot of them have a "no parties" rule that covers weddings etc. I just wouldn't want you to get asked to leave...

It's OK to take a short amount of time for photos, but any guests not in the pictures would need to be hosted with food and drink, like a cocktail hour.

Thanks for your concern. Yes, our VRBO knows we’re hosting a wedding there. They even provide the table, chairs, linens, tents, etc. We have to pay an additional fee, but it’s something we cleared with them before booking.

Thanks for the advice on the pictures!

I've seen couples leave plenty of times during cocktail hour to take pictures. Ad long as there's food/drink for the guests and you're not long taking pictures it should be fine.

In addition to the cocktail hour, you could also do a first look and family photos before the ceremony so you’re not as rushed going off site.

As long as the owner is aware of your wedding, you should be ok. Most have very strict rules forbidding them, and Airbnb doesn’t allow them even with private owner’s permission.

From a guest standpoint, it is very odd to have the couple leave in the middle of the wedding, because the ceremony and reception are one event. It comes across as poor planning/hosting.
Can you by any chance take pictures in your wedding day attire before the wedding day? That is something that some photographers offer as a way to alleviate any inconvenience and disruptions away from guests on the wedding day. Another option in addition is to take all formal pictures before guests arrive.

Every wedding that I have attended!

The wedding party goes away for pictures but has the venue open for drinks and hors d'oeuvres.

I have been to some that have taken far too long to get back to the venue. So if you can avoid it, and take your pictures before the ceremony that would be great. But I am going to make my guest wait. I have food, drinks, and a photo booth. So they will be fine.
