Gold fish centerpieces????

Brianna, on April 13, 2009 at 4:07 PM Posted in Planning 0 17

I am looking at making my own centerpieces for our reception. I have a bunch of different size cylinders. I have a 22inch with calla lilies in it, a 16inch that have red roses with the color of the water dark red, a 11inch that has greens in it, a 8 1/2 inch one that I was thinking of putting goldfish in, and a 7inch one with white flowers.

Do you think the goldfish will look good with the flowers in the other cylinders?? Has anyone used/heard of goldfish in the centerpiece before? What do you do with the goldfish after the reception?

Personally I would not use Gold Fish for centerpieces. It just would cause you more problems than you think. Looking at a gold fish while I am eating is something that I do not want to see, especially if they use the bathroom and you see poop coming out. Then what if one dies, have to feed them, you have to be careful of how to carry them into the place with out shaking them up so much. Then you have to make sure if there is enough water for them. And after the reception you have to make sure you can give them away or if people want to take them. I think the fish would be more harm then good. With gold fish they are more of a dirty fish that likes dirty water. I hope this help you to see the con's of this. I do not see any pro's in this outcome. Try using crystals instead, and add a light in the water to give it a different effect.

I have heard of it before and I think it sounds cute. If you don't want to keep the fishes then maybe you could have games and give them away (along with the center piece) as prizes? Like their could be a dancing contest, or the DJ could ask questions about a song or about the two of you and the first person to get it right wins.

If nothing else, post an ad on craigslist or freecycle. Maybe someone will want them.

I think a Beta fish would be an easier fish to handle AND keep in mind there are some challenges to having fish as a centerpiece. Idon't think that having them there will make anyone lose their appetite though.

Are you putting all of these on the same table? I ask because you can choose a betta that is the color of some of the flowers.

You might want to try it out first and see how it looks. It sounds unique but you would hate to invest time and money and it not look how you imagine.

ITA with the above poster. I think fish in a centerpiece is a lovely idea! I may be partial because I am doing it myself. Check out my board. I have a drawing of a vase in the midst of flowers with a fish...but you get the idea once you see the picture. I am using the siamese fighting fish, also known as beta fish. They are absolutely gorgeouse. And an added plus is they are quite hardy. You can only have one male in a tank at a time though. And the females look ugly so it would be a waste to put a female in with your male.

If you have a wedding planner, then it would be her/his job to place the fish in the vase (mine is). Even my caterer said if she was busy they wouldnt mind doing it. Afterwards I may keep them or give them as gifts, I havent decided.

My florist said hes heard of fish centerpieces and thinks its great! GOOGLE fish centerpieces and click on images...it has tons of ideas. GL!!

I liked the goldfish centerpieces at the wedding I went to and it was something fun to take home!

My mom and I were actually talking about this about a month ago. She went to a wedding where the colors were ivory and black [the "most beautiful wedding she'd ever seen"] and they used black goldfish in giant glass bowls and had ivory colored lilies floating in there. She said it was really neat and cute. After the reception they just gave the fish to any guests that wanted them.

OK...we just got married last week and we actually did use goldfish as our centerpeices. Most of them died during the ceremony. We were planning on giving them away to our guests, which would have been the DJ's job, but they didn't make it that far. I think that the beta fish would be alot easier.

Personally I think it's kinda cruel to use another life as a decoration. I mean, what are you going to do with them after? My friend did this and ended up dumping them down the toilet.

I think it sounds really cute but goldfish die if you look at them the wrong way. There would be nothing worse than a floating fish during dinner lol. Betas are great and a little hearty. Just a piece of advise with them, make sure the cilinder or bowl is deep enough I have seen those little suckers flop out of too shallow of containers. I think with the flowers would be really cute! MAke sure whatever fish you use can live with the flowers you have chosen.

I agree the beta's can be in water with a certain plant and love it. They do look better, but just keep in mind if anyone does not want to take them home or if one dies. To me it is too much to worry about especailly if you have more other things to worry about.

One more thing to think about: If you have to prep the water for the fish, what will that do to your flowers? Talk to both a fish specialist and a florist to make sure everything you want to do is compatible.

NOOOOO! I have heard that many times the fish die because the water is not properly circulated/oxygenated. Also, like someone else said, you can actually see them pooping in the water...not appealing when you're eating dinner. Also, what do you do after the reception? I would not be happy if I "won" a goldfish that I had to take home.

We're doing betas as our centerpieces and guest favors. Basically, we're gonna announce that when they're leaving if they'd like to take a fish, to take the whole glass bowl with them in it lol

I know this is a super old post but it was super helpful to me in planning my centerpieces. Just wanted to add that if you buy the fish from a fish store rather than a chain pet store, you can usually tell them what you are using them for and prearrange to give the fish back after the wedding. Depending on the store they will even give you some credit back!
