Good Birdseed Experiences?

Tori098, on March 30, 2016 at 12:19 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 18

Hi everyone! So I'm wanting to throw birdseed after the ceremony, but all I'm seeing are these horror stories of how birdseed practically ruined their wedding (maybe a bit dramatic) because it hurts and gets in your hair and dress. I already have a big bag of birdseed that the birds in my area don't like so I need to get rid of it somehow and this seems like the perfect way to put it to use. Has anyone heard of or had good experience with throwing birdseed?

It's so rare a venue will allow it anymore, have you checked to be sure you can? That was top of the list on every venue we looked at---no throwing anything, no confetti, no popper, no birdseed, no glitter...etc.

I have never thrown anything at any recently married couple, nor would I want anything thrown at me. Try throwing the birdseed in a public park?

Lmao birdseed ruining the wedding? Of course it may get in your hair, dress etc, but so would the traditional rice... p.s. the bird nerd in me wants to know what kind of seed it is so I can hypothesize why they're not eating it...

Lol I don't think it will ruin your wedding! I personally wouldnt want it in my hair and down my dress though. Like AMW said, it is also highly likely that it may not be allowed at your venue anyhow.

Thanks for the replies! The venue isn't really a "wedding venue" so they are very flexible and lax. I wanted to do something for pictures sake but I don't like any of the other "alternatives" except flower petals but cannot afford them. So really my options are throw the birdseed or do nothing. Btw I have 5 days unail the big day so Diy's are not an option anymore. :/

Dana, it is just a wild bird seed with cherry oil. They will eat the black sunflower seeds but nothing else. It's strange.

Ah, they're being picky, but also smart by choosing the seed with more nutrients. Mine always eat "the good stuff" first and scatter the small millet, eventually it gets eaten, but not until everything else is gone.

The cherry oil might get sticky for you though, so that's my concern with using it for the wedding - does it feel sticky to the touch? If you have time to shop this week, what about biodegradable confetti?

They are! It's so irritating. They stop coming after all the sunflower seeds are eaten so I have to dump the rest and put fresh out just for them to do the same. Ugh... lol. It is not sticky to the touch. Where can I find biodegradable confetti not online? And is it expensive?

I know you're trying to get rid of the birdseed, but an ok /affordable last-minute alternative is bubbles. They sell the tiny bottles at walmart or the dollar store in packs of 15 or 20. Also, a friend's dad had everyone release colorful balloons when they ran to getaway car (beautiful, and cost $1 each at dollar tree already filled w helium. Cheaper if you had time to diy).

When I was a Girl Scout, I remember hearing the story of the founder...

"During their ceremony, a grain of rice, thrown by a well-wisher at her wedding, became lodged in Daisy's ear. The pain of the impacted rice became so great that the couple was forced to return home to have it removed. As a result, Low's hearing was permanently damaged, and resulted in frequent ear infections and eventual deafness in both ears."

I've been traumatized to it ever since lol be it rice or feed.

LOL TaMorey - that story is the EXACT reason i refuse to use birdseed too. I have never forgotten it, and its been a LONGGGG ass time since ive been a girl scout, lol. We're doing bubbles instead. No mess, no risk, environmentally friendly.

Bubbles can be messy too (they can stain clothing) and make the floors/pavement slippery.

I've never heard of a bad birdseed experience, but an alternative could be silly string. My brother in law says he is going to use it at my wedding.

@Tina -- we're outside, so the slipperyness isnt a worry - our guestlist isnt big enough for it to get crazy anyways. I've never heard of the staining, though!

edit: just looked it up - apparently you can get no-stain, no-dye bubbles, so i think ill do that just in case and decant it into smaller bottles.

Honestly I don't know where you'd find it, just know it exists- I'd check party stores. Also I know it's on etsy, maybe refine your search to shops within your own city or a neighboring town and see if they'd let you pick it up rather than ship. I did that with a Christmas gift this past year! Etsy sellers are the best Smiley smile

Why not have the guests wave ribbon wands?
