We are planning a wedding reception in our home. We will do the usual meat, cheese, veggie, fruit, bread, cracker trays, plus a number of other appetizers and a few sweets. We will have coffee and...in an effort to keep it simple...a few wines. I would like to do boxed wines as I think it would be easy to serve and store and not take up space like bottles...my questions are..

1. Are there good boxed wines that you recomend? I like most anything...my future spouse doesn't drink anymore but remembers boxed wines as cheap and shoddy...if its good wine it shouldn't matter if it comes from a box, should it?

2. I like dry wine but know most people don't ...what mix of wines would you recomend?...I need more guidance than just white and red...

3. We are going for simple, comfortable, yet classy...Christmas decor...I could gift wrap the boxes, cut out for the spigot and add a classy tag for the wine label...it could work, couldn't it?

I do my red and white sangrias for parties and I'm going to do the red for the reception. I use Riesling or merlot, brandy, ginger ale, juice, agave, and fruit depending on the seasons. People rave over it and since we are having a tapas style reception, I thought the red sangria would be fitting.

I served Franzia- White Zin and Sunset Blush. I had no complaints and no one knew that it was boxed wine. I served the wines in dispensers with ice chambers to keep the wine chilled without watering it down. People drank it down lol!

I'm kind of a wine snob now, but I used to drink boxed wine all the time--Franzia, even. Now when I taste boxed wines or blush wines, I feel like I'm drinking Boone's Farm. Honestly, there are so many good tasting wines in the $10 range that I would get those. If you buy too many bottles, keep them on hand for future guests or to take with you to parties for hostess gifts.

White and blush boxed wine have to be kept chilled and I don't know how many people you're expecting, but they'd have to open up the refrigerator everytime they need a refill. I know that when I'm hosting a party, people going into the fridge every few minutes would drive me crazy when I'm rushing around. Anyway, it's up to you. Your guests might not care what kind of wine it is (I wouldn't have cared back when I was 24).

@kathy! Most deff! There's so many fantastic winery in Douglas county and well all over Washington for that matter! My favorite spot to hit is a business park in woodinville there's approx 25-30 wine tasting rooms from all over Washington nestled in there. My family and FH family have vacation homes in chelan so we frequent many of the wineries over there. Rio vista was recently featured on evening magazine because its famous for having the only fly in service,I've never done it before but you can take a seaplane and be dropped off right in front. In the summer through we usually just take the boat up river from orondo and beach the boat it's a great activity! But you can also drive in too. I included a pic from a wedding there last summer. I cannot wait! : ) I'm not knocking on box wines if you like it more power to ya, but she asked for opinions and my personal opinion is bottled wines.that's all. I come from a family that prefers the wine tasting experience and we buy the ones we like

Sangrias would be fun!!! You could do a build your own bar kind of thing with different fruits and stuff Smiley smile My girls did a mimosa bar for my bridal shower with champagne, orange juice, pineapple juice and peach juice, and they each had complimenting cut fruit to include!! It was so fun!

@Alicia, the sea planes to the winery sounds like fun!

@all, the Sangria idea can be fun....although it can also be crazy, as it tends to be higher in alcohol. LOL! Sangria can be made with white, red or rose' wines. Cheryls wedding is in December, so Sangria may not be the best choice, but then again, it may fit the bill.

@Cheryl, actually, most people tend to drink red wine, but, that will depend on your guests. Do your guests drink a lot of wine? If so, do you know what they typically drink? If they tend to drink less expensive wines, then boxed wine will work. If they tend to drink moderate or more expensive wines on a regular basis, you may want to step up a bit. If they usually drink liquor, and you are offering wine only, boxed wine will be fine.

Boxed wine is soo much better in quality now...Black Box is really good for a box wine. And they make wine barrels you can put them in to "disguise" them at the reception: https://www.etsy.com/listing/120267244/2-box-wine-barrel-dispensers-cedar-ideal .... love it!

I haven't posted here since the wedding. It was perfect. I got tons of compliemnts on the wines and the presentation. I wrapped the boxes in gold paper and made exchangable lids for the whites and an "exchanable bow" for the red. I set it up so I could put an ice pack inside the boxes of white. I kept them outside (it was about 5 above that day) until we used them. All we did when a box went empty was swap out the lid or the bow. The lids had fancy bows as well. All the bows had a tag like a present labeling the type of wine. We had "black box" wine. It was well reviewed.
