Good, cheap iced tea?

Shellie, on May 31, 2012 at 4:55 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 24

So ya'll convinced me to add iced tea to our beverage selection- but I don't drink iced tea.

Any recommendations on good, cheap iced tea? Preferably something premixed, but we could make it ahead of time if we needed to. We will be using 2.5 gallon dispensers to serve it.

I guess you are DIYing it?

I suggest not the mixes - blech - but trying looking for "family size" "cold brew" ice tea bags. I know that Lipton and Luzianne's makes it, and I've found them different places, like Walmart.

The great thing about it is that it's so easy and it's REAL tea, lol. You just put the tea bags in cold water, in the pitchers. No hot water brew. Provide your guests with lemon and sugar and a diet sweetener (I like stevia packets - you can get those in bulk too, it's natural and no calorie sweetener), maybe even some fresh mint sprigs (try a Cash and Carry type restaurant supply store).

    Have fun!

Lipton, I don't like the pre-made teas b/c sometimes they have a funky taste to them.

Tazo? You can get it at walmart. I just make normal black tea than cool, and add sugar, a bit of honey, and a little lemon juice. I do prefer their lemongrass flavor, but I take it you are looking for black tea?

Monique, we have to provide all the beverages. I'd prefer something that comes pre-made, but we are willing to make batched ahead as well.

We where thinking we would probably just put lemons in the tea, there isn't really a place to put them without them getting gross, but we will provide sugar and sweetners.

If you want to put lemons then get a bunch of tea bags and make it that way the mix is already sweetened and has lemon flavor in it but its not very good sometimes

    I use Lipton Tea bags

    Arizona's Sweet Tea is outstanding.

Do you have a Swiss Farms or Turkey Hill near you? They also make an outstanding iced tea.

I haven't heard of either of those places.

I don know Arizona makes big gallon jugs, I was thinking about those but I have no idea if they are gross or not- good to know they aren't.

If you put lemons in beforehand, just do the juice. It's prettier with the slices in it, but leaving slices in for a long time can make the tea taste bad.

Lots of people in Alaska (at least around UAF) drink the Arizona teas by the gallons

I like to hot brew my own tea...the trick is to make it VERY concentrated when you are hot brewing it (if you're sweetening it, hot brewing allows the sugar to dissolve too)

Once the tea has steeped and it very dark you can add water to it to balance it out. You might also slice lemons and let them float.

Depending on location you might want a sweet and non-sweet tea--I know sweet tea is a HUGE thing in the south....

I didn't know that leaving lemons in can make it taste funny- thanks for the tip!

If you have Chicken Express near you, they sell tea (unsweetened and sweet) by the gallon and I think their cost is about $3.50 gallon. You can get about 20 glasses (6 oz) out of each gallon. Hope this helps.

I've never heard of chicken express! Washington doesn't have a lot of fast food places. No chick-fil-a, just got a sonic and a taco del mar....

Arizona does make tea in gallon size. Look around. What about going to a place that sells things in bulk, like Costco or Sams Club, maybe they have like family size pre-made jugs of tea or something.

I thought you were talking about just tea for one person, then I was going to suggest Starbuck's Passion Tea with Raspberry. I can't get enough of that stuff!

My FH loves sweet tea. We are doing sweet tea and lemonade for our drinks. It goes well with our BBQ themed food. We are just going to make it how we would at home. He puts sugar in, then the water then Lipton bags. Puts it out in the sun. Also if you want it to go quicker you could purchase the iced tea brewer at Walmart for $20. You just use the tea bags with that also.
