Gopro Wedding Video

Dana, on May 7, 2019 at 1:54 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 2 9

Has anyone done their own wedding video with a GoPro and pulled it off? We have a few GoPros in the family and thought it would be a fun idea to designate a few people from our bridal party and maybe our photographer to document the night with GoPros. I am relatively experienced in making videos and have someone in the family who could put together a professional looking one as well

I would go into it not expecting an awesome quality video. It's going to be shaky with shots of weird stuff. If you use tripods are you going to put guests in charge of running those? I would also only have your photographer focus on their drop of photographing.

I've seen fun videos where it was strapped to a liquor bottle during the wedding or hidden in the bridal bouquet (I might try this since I'm DIYing mine) but most of the time the raw footage isn't there to make the video you might have in mind.

We bought 3 GoPros and plan on having them set up on tripods for the ceremony and then have bridal party members record key reception times (dances, cake cutting, etc.). One of FH's friends does video editing so we're going to ask him to edit together a video for us later. Hopefully it works out! Honestly even if the quality isn't the best as long as the moments are captured to re-watch I'm fine with that. I don't need a big cinematic production.

Agreed! We have the newer GoPros too so hopefully that might help with some of the shakiness. Have you thought about how many batteries/memory cards you are going to need? That's the thing that makes me most nervous - GoPros die so quickly (or maybe its just mine lol)

We still have to figure that out. Supposedly the battery life is 90 minutes, so at least the ceremony should be covered. We're going to be at the church for a little while taking pictures after so we might charge them then and then also have backup batteries for during the reception. I think we just got 1 big memory card (not sure exactly what size...FH bought them) for each one. But it might be good to have backup memory cards as well...

My husband and I used a GoPro to capture our Wedding in November.

First thing: This was a small wedding. 60 people. So, it was easier to capture everything and we were able to have the GoPro close to the ceremony.

We had a family member interview people at the wedding to get advice and messages from the guests. He was amazing at it and I love the coverage. It was pretty high quality, granted not the same you would get with a videographer but if you want a more documentary style I think it's perfect. Vidoegraphers don't interview people and it wouldn't be the same for us. The sound was clear. We also have a full video of the different dances. Advantages of a GoPro is you can use the wide angle setting, so it captured the whole room during the dances, which was incredible.

In addition to the GoPro, a close family friend ended up bringing his nice camera and captured the day without me even asking, so if you know someone who loves taking pictures anyway that adds a great addition to what you have on the GoPro.

All this combined with my husband's dad taking a video with his phone of the ceremony provided all the coverage I needed. And allowed me to splurge on the photographer.

We have a lot of technology out there that can get the wedding coverage you want of your wedding. I was happy with our choice. I am cutting everything together now with a free program called Shotcut and it allows me to do a lot of awesome stuff.

Basically, I would choose a videographer if you have some money to spend (we paid for our own wedding so we would have had to sacrifice things that were more important for a pro. Or, if you want a professional video. Ours is documentary style. I think it is more genuine to us, but that is a personal preference. And if you do go the GoPro route, recruit people to capture some extra moments to add in.

Did anyone attach a gopro to a bottle of liquor to be passed around? Can you provide the model of that camera as well as where to purchase the accessories to mount the camera on a bottle? We'd like to do the same at our wedding!

I didn't end up doing this but most Go Pros come with accessory kits including an adjustable strap that you could use to wrap around the bottle. Otherwise I would check Amazon/Best Buy/Ebay. I don't have an a name brand Go Pro but an "action camera" that I got from Amazon a few years back that I use for hiking videos. You can definitely find something in any price range - mine was less than $50. It looks a lot like the one in the photo/how-to below. Link attached.

Awesome, I saw this also. Thank you! I'll try to remember to post the solution we come up with and the links to the specific camera and strap.
