Got married almost a year ago and decided not to change my name, now i am changing my mind.

Kayla, on July 20, 2019 at 8:07 AM Posted in Married Life 1 8

I thought I wanted to keep my name, but now I am sure I want to change it to my husbands.
So our marriage license has my current/maiden name and I am not sure where to start with anything now.

We got married in CA and live in OR. Can I just change the marriage license? Would I have to go back to CA to do this? I don't know where to start.

    Check your state laws.
I just had to take my marriage license (with my maiden name) to the Social Security office. It was easy and done in 10 minutes. I then took my marriage license and the paper work from SS to the DMV and got a new license. And just like that my name was changed.
Each state is different though. From what I’ve heard there’s no time limit

I did this as well. There is no name other than my maiden name on my marriage certificate.

You should call the socail security office and ask because that's generally where it begins.

In California you have to put what you intend your name to be on the marriage license. So if you put you intend to keep your maiden name I don’t believe you would be able to change it thru just the marriage certificate. You may have to get a court order.

You definitely wouldn’t have to go to a different state, this likely doesn’t have to do with the marriage certificate anymore, but will depend on how your state works. You always change your name where you live anyway. In some states, they may simply let you go ahead and change your name simply with a marriage certificate (it’s not important that it says your name, its simply important to verify you were married). In other states given the passage of time, you might have to go to court to do it. I’d start by asking your local social security office. The first step is going in for a new SSN card. They make accept the name change simply by seeing the marriage certificate, but, only they know for sure!

I have been thinking the same - but all my work paperwork is in my maiden name. Maybe I will just go by my married name?

I'm struggling with deciding to either keep my name or take his so I'm curious to know why you changed your mind now, if you don't mind sharing ?
