Grandpa vs Dad Advice

Jessica, on March 12, 2021 at 8:16 AM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 13
Trying to decide between my grandpa giving me away or my father. My grandpa has been there for me my whole life, but choosing him over my dad will kill what little relationship me and my dad have. Who would you choose?

Why don't you have both of them walk you down the aisle? I've read about people who were given away by both of their parents and people who asked both their dad and step-dad.

Why don't you have them both walk you down the aisle. My cousin had her step dad and dad walk her down the aisle.

If it really comes down to it, choose the person you want (who seems to be your grandfather) and don't simply choose your dad out of obligation. A reasonable person would understand, even if it hurt. If your dad can't deal... that's his problem, not yours. The best you can do is to be kind and calm, but firm, when informing the relevant parties of your decision.

I would do both for sure! Or have one walk you down the aisle and one do a first dance with you (if you're doing spotlight dances)

Personally I would go for grandpa - don’t make these types of decisions out of what you think is obligation. If your father wasn’t part of your life or upbringing, that was his decision. He can’t expect to be given this opportunity on a very important day in your life.

Is it possible you could do both? If not, then I would choose the person who raised me

Definitely this. If your relationship with your dad is so tenuous that a wedding planning decision would kill it, then that's not really much of a relationship. This is not a criticism of you! Your dad needs to learn how to be an adult and face reality. I am sorry you are worrying about this, but I would choose your grandfather with confidence and leave your dad to sort out his feelings.

You could have you dad walk you, and do the first dance with your grandpa (or vice versa). Tell them ahead of time so they both know the game plan.

I basically have the same situation. I chose my grandpa. I fully expect my dad to throw a tantrum when I tell him, but ultimately, it's my day and I deserve the person who was actually there for me by my side when I walk down that aisle.

You know in your heart wich one of them you want. It would be a bad thing that you have a "walking down the aisle regret".
It's a good'thing that you're concerned by dad's feelings, it's honors you. But at the end of the day, don't forget that your and your partner's happiness come first, even before dad's feelings as you can't please everyone anyways.
