Granny smith apple centerpieces in an aquarium?

Tracy, on November 2, 2011 at 10:47 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 19

My wedding reception is in an aquarium. My colors are purple and lime green. My mother seems to think it's stupid to use granny smith apples in an aquarium and that it doesn't go with my "theme". Which, by the way, I have no theme other than purple and lime green. So, thoughts?

Whatever you do, don't do live fish.

I don't think it's a bad idea. But is your mother offering other suggestions?

Are these fake apples? How many granny smiths are you going to buy? And if real, (WAY out of season) will someone take them all home and make pies and applesauce so they don't go to waste?

Um... I don't know about the apples. They will be real. And we can't use live fish at the aquarium. It's one of their rules.

I would at least go with the water theme, maybe do floating candles in a cylinder vase, wrapped with purple and lime ribbon?

I understand the granny smith apples b/c of the color, but i'm not really sure if it "goes"....but, ultimately it's up to you, so do what makes you happy! :-)

I like the idea, I'm just not sure how you would wrap the ribbon if you were using floating candles... Ideas?

You need to check the local grocery for apples and figure out how much they will cost. Then add 20% for future increase in the apple market. Are real apples in your budget?

I honestly wouldn't do a perishable as a centerpiece. (Unless someone could turn it into applesauce.) But canned goods look stupid too.

Since you're "kinda" having a DW, who will be in charge of purchasing the apples the week of and setting them up? Is that something you and the BMs will do btwn Thurs & Sun? If they aren't available on your island, will you have to go mainland to get them? I used to vaca on Emerald Isle and the grocery store selection was less then stellar in the winter.

Why doesn't your mom like the idea?

That ribbon looks tied together with fishing wire. So maybe an added weight on the bottom?

Yay! Another aquarium bride! Personally, theme or not, it would look out of place to have apples in the centerpieces. I didnt start out with a theme but it wound up that way because of the venue so I just went with the flow...

Yes, apples are in my budget and putting them together wouldn't be a problem. Most of the girls and both our families will be here on Saturday night, so we'll be able to put them together then. I'll buy everything in advance. Granny smiths never go bad! My mom doesn't like it because she says they don't "go" with my theme. But I don't really have one, so I'm assuming she means the aquarium in general.

Tracy, I would check with them on when they want everything brought to the aquarium. Im bringing all my centerpieces on thursday, the night of the rehearsal so they have it to set up asap on sunday.

Hot glue gun holds the ribbons on glass nicely if done correctly (that was my first centerpiece trial)

What do you plan on doing with the apples later? I could see if you were going to use them, but if you are just going to throw them away then that's a waste.

So... Why is it a waste to throw away apples? Does everyone keep all their floral centerpieces for life? Or make them into flower pie?

I have to agree that apples would seem out of place... but maybe because they're more warm and speak "outside" rather than "under water". Have you thought about limes? I've seen some really need centerpieces with submerged limes, especially when they are cut up and arranged along the walls of a vase. Maybe line them with purple ribbon similar to the picture above.. at least this way it would give a more "tropical" feel to it rather than a country home feel that apples give. That's just my opinion, fruit has personalities. Smiley smile

Remember though, it is your wedding and these kinds of decisions are up to you.

I say that sounds great, apples are cheaper than flowers, you can donate them to a homeless shelter afterwards, and a simple glass bowl of apples placed correctly is elegant!

I agree with your mom that apples will seem out of place. Even though you aren't purposefully going for a theme other than your color scheme, when you have such a thematic venue such as an aquarium, guests are going to latch themselves to the "under water/sea life" theme anyway. Like Jen said, apples are going to give a country home type feel which drastically contrasts with the venue. It seems as if you already have your heart set on using them, however I'm definitely on your mom's side with this.

If you are going with a tropical theme (including the acquarium and fish), you could use limes. Otherwise, I'd stick with flowers, personally.

I did a wedding last year in a planetarium. They had taller vases filled with lemons, (which represent prosperity, I think). Not exactly the same, but they looked cool. Unless mom has a better idea, go with what you like.

I just went to a wedding that had a yellow ad purple theme. The bride chose to use lemons as part of her decorations. She had lemons, some crystal beads and then those branches that everyone uses in centerpieces (forget what you call them). She then had little ornaments that represented her and the groom hanging from the branches. I thought it was cute and I think apples would have the same effect. And surely by the end of the night, the guys had made up a game with the lemons. Here is a random pic I took of the lemons (not really that good of a shot):

I give in, no apples. lol! I've got a couple of ideas for centerpieces.

    1) Vase with water beads in the bottom and a floating candle at the top, with purple ribbon tied around it.

    2) Vase with sand in the bottom and a ball candle.

I'm going to make the first one today and see what it looks like. Any other ideas are appreciated!

I love granny smith apples. I think the vases with stuff in your wedding color in it is a great idea.
