Groom matches the bride?

melanie, on January 9, 2017 at 11:03 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

I'm a little confused as far as wedding attire goes and hoping you ladies & gents can help me out. We went to Men's warehouse yesterday so my FH could look at suits and get suits ordered and out of the way. So he decided on a dark grey tux and then we had to pick everything else, including shirt color. I guess I always assumed that he would be in a white shirt but they said he needs to match me so he needs to wear an ivory shirt. Just looking at the color of the ivory shirt I Immediately didn't like how it looked, it just looked dirty to me. Like it was washed in brown water or something. Of course this is just looking at the shirt as they didn't have him try anything on and he wasn't actually wearing it, is this the norm? I'm hoping it will look way better when he is wearing everything else and I'm just over reacting! If I wear ivory does he have to too? They said if he doesn't wear ivory it won't look right. does anyone have any experience with this and should we match? Thanks!!

Perhaps you should buy a pantsuit that matches his attire. Alternatively, I'm sure you could get a duplicate dress fitted for him. Either way, matching is the only way to go.

My FH and I are not matching. He is in dark grey vest and a lighter grey shirt. My dress is ivory. The only thing we are matching is his tie to my belt color if I have one. If not he will wear a black tie.

Fallbride I was thinking the same thing, it's not a nice ivory they have there. They also said the ring bearer had to match the groom yet they didn't have any dark grey suits for kids lol it didn't make any sense to me at all. I don't think I have ever seen a man in an ivory shirt, but then again I don't pay much attention to the color of the shirt either

H picked out a navy blue suit. He said a white shirt made him look too much like a waiter and yes the ivory looked dirty. So he went with a grey undershirt. My dress was ivory, but I think it all looked great together!

Wow, the grey shirt does look great with the navy! I may steal that. I got an ivory dress too and the lady at the boutique freaked me out about having white next to my dress and making my dress look dirty. I even got an ivory ring bearer pillow instead of white cause she freaked me out so much!

FH is wearing all black other than a royal blue tie. It's a personal preference.

Kim, I know exactly how you feel that's what they were doing to me, they kept saying my dress would look weird or off colored and dirty

Do what you want. In every experience I've had with Men's Wearhouse, they've been extremely pushy about things and basically wouldn't let me shop like an adult. I went to exchange a shirt one time for my husband and I was trying to buy a plain white shirt to go with a nice black tie that my husband owned. We were going to a wedding and that's what my husband wanted to wear. The salesman there told me that my husband would look like he was going to a funeral and that I should consider getting a colored shirt with a colored matching tie. I told him to just sell me what I was asking for, or I would leave. I can't stand it there.

They also tried to do the ivory shirt/ivory dress thing with us. Their ivory isn't the same and will look bad. Buy/rent what you want.

My dress was very ivory (the designer calls the color 'Oyster') but DH just wore a white shirt! It looked totally fine!

Thanks MAMW they were very pushy and it wasn't a great experience, originally they were going to put him in a light grey almost striped looking faded suit that looked like something from the 80's and my FH hated it and was hesitant to say anything, I'm so happy he had me go with him or he would have ended up with a whole suit he didn't like.

The men in our wedding party wore ivory shirts - they looked just like the white shirts by themselves. I only noticed a difference in color when we held it up to a stark white one. Kind of like "white" "diamond white" and "ivory" in dresses - they all look pretty white until you look at them next to each other.

ETA: In the grand scheme of things, no one is going to notice if he's wearing "white" and you're wearing "ivory" so definitely go with what makes you both happy! :-)

My dress is champagne and ivory and DH has a navy tux with white shirt... You do not need to match. Get what you want!

Men's Warehouse is very pushy when we went to get our suits ordered. If you don't want to wear the ivory, call their customer support. Their customer support was more helpful that the people in the store.

Sales people at MW are not experts at this, no matter what they think. Go with a classic white if that's what the two of you want. He'll look great.

Thanks Zaz did you guys go to men's warehouse too? Just curious Smiley smile We ordered the GM's in white and FH would be the only one in Ivory so I felt like he would stand out like the one guy with a dirty shirt lol

@Melanie, I honestly can't stand them. But every wedding my husband is in involves them (my husband is like Katherine Heigl in 27 Dresses....so. many. weddings.), and now I turn my bitch meter up to 11 every time we go in there!
