Groom's cake and wedding cake serving size

Candace, on August 22, 2021 at 11:13 AM Posted in Planning 0 6
If you're having a groom's cake, do you reduce the size of your wedding cake? Let's say I'm planning for 130 guests. If I have a groom's cake that serves 50, should I keep the wedding cake at a 130 serving size? Or reduce it to say 90 servings (depending on the baker's servings per tier specifications)?

It’s of course totally up to you, but here’s my thinking…If it’s going to be the same flavor cake as the wedding cake, then I would reduce it. If it’s going to be a different flavor, you may want to consider keeping the wedding cake the same size to ensure everyone can get the flavor they want. If you have leftovers, you could always put slices in to go boxes for guests to take home.

Good point. I have different flavors in mind so I will take that into consideration. I didn't think about having to-go boxes for the cake. Jotting that down now. Thank you!

Groom cakes are common in the South as an additional dessert and often chocolate or the groom’s favorite since the main cake is vanilla or similar. So you would have enough of the main cake for everyone to get one piece and then however many slices you get from that. Keep in mind that wedding cake slices are tiny and if you have a family member cut the cake, they may do birthday cake size slices (equals 3 wedding slices). While a few guests will not have any cake, others will go back for seconds.

I'm one of those that goes back for seconds, especially when the groom's cake is chocolate! I didn't realize it was a Southern thing. I'm in Texas and there's always been a groom's cake at weddings. Thanks for your input.

Yeah, it makes sense since I'm really trying to be budget-conscious.
