Grooms Cake Explained

So until I got engaged I had never heard of a grooms cake. It was in one of my wedding planning books that my grandmother had given me. I asked her what a grooms cake was and she said it is the cake that all the single women attending the wedding will take a slice from to take home and put under their pillow and that is supposed to give them dreams about their future spouse. I thought that was a funny and weird little "legends has it" kind of tradition. But now on wedding wire it seems like grooms cakes are smaller cakes that are meant for only the groom? I'm not sure. I'm not sure if maybe my grandma got things mixed up or maybe I'm mixing two different things up? What do most people think a grooms cake is for?

I've never been to a wedding where there wasn't a grooms cake (as it's big in the south where I live). I don't think anyone would bat an eye if there wasn't one. We are having one because FH and I both have a crazy sweet tooth! I am getting a smaller version for him made to be waiting in our room after the wedding.

I love the hobbit hole!! I might just steal if for a rehearsal dinner surprise for my FH. I love the idea because I do think it adds some more fun to the wedding by getting to represent something that he loves but I don't think I'd want to spend the money for more cake that will go uneaten.. rehearsal dinner on the other hand will need dessert!

We got a groom's cake! It will look like this. We got it for around 60 people. Our wedding cake will feed 100. Out guest list is at 100. It was just a fun idea we saw on Pinterest and wasn't out of our budget. Plus it gives us another flavor of cake!

I've seen this at a wedding we attended recently. They did it at the rehearsal dinner which to me makes a lot more sense than an additional cake at the wedding.

I honestly had no freaking idea what a groom's cake was for, I just got it as a surprise for my DH and as dessert for our rehearsal dinner. My husband is a soccer coach, played soccer for the majority of his life, and is pretty much just obsessed with soccer so it was a huge hit. Plus, we freaking love cake.

I didn't know it was a thing before WW. I didn't have one at our wedding but we had several flavors of cupcakes

We had a red velvet armadillo grooms cake, inspired by the movie Steel Magnolias.

I actually did the whole put a slice under my pillow thing when my aunt got married. I was around 13 years old and dreamed of Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street.

I have one for my FH, it's a southern tradition where I am from. It is small, only feeds about 25 but his will look like a hockey puck with his favorite team all over it..FH loves hockey and during the season we go to games together
