Grooms cake - worth it?

SB, on May 4, 2018 at 9:36 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 28

Did everyone here do a grooms cake? Everyone keeps suggesting I should do one because it's the tradition, but for one, FH hates cake, won't touch it. Two - I'm getting a cake big enough to feed at least 300 people so we'll have plenty and I don't want any leftover. I'd rather put the money towards something else.

Hi there - I think a groom's cake is more popular in some areas of the country than others. Since you will have plenty of cake and your FH isn't a big cake eater, I'd totally skip it and spend $ elsewhere! I'm going to make one for my FH who loves cake (a hockey puck with black fondant) since i'm excited to see if I can do it. It will cost under $10 total otherwise I wouldn't do it either.

I totally agree. Oh that's awesome! You'll have to post pictures of it after the fact. Good luck, I'm sure it'll be wonderful!

    It's definitely not necessary.

Grooms cakes are fun ways to share a sense of who your partner is to you with your guests as well as share a tasty treat with the one you love.

I'll be doing one because it's a tradition in my region (the south) and I'd like to surprise him.

Many users here think it's a waste. They say their FH will already be helping with the main cake and it's his cake too. My FH will also be helping choose the main cake and yes, it will be his cake too. The grooms cake is a nice gesture in my opinion that I'd like to surprise him with. It's within my budget, so I'll be doing it.

In your case with FH not liking cake, I don't believe it's worth it. If you want to surprise him though, it doesn't have to be a cake. You can surprise him with his favorite pie at the rehearsal dinner, or have his favorite cookie flavor at the rehearsal dinner or reception. If you would rather spend the money elsewhere, spend it elsewhere! Smiley smile

We're in the south as well and that's why everyone keeps questioning it! Lol.

I would like to do one with a hunting/outdoors theme and I know it would get eaten, but he wouldn't even touch it. He won't touch anything sweet unfortunately, so I need to come up with a different surprise. I just can't think of what to do. Thanks for the input!

They aren’t necessary. FWs family does groom cakes (they’re from Texas) and I didn’t want her to miss out on tradition. Not to mention she only will eat cake with cream cheese frosting, which we weren’t using on our wedding cake so I thought it’d be nice to get her a grooms cake

    Good Question,

I will not be purchasing a grooms cake. Our cake is enough for the guests and you can always surprise him with a groom cake for his anniversary. IDK. I did think of this but like everyone said, it is not necessary.

I honestly didn't think grooms cake were a real thing, just something that people with a lot of money who could afford a cake from Ace of Cakes would do. It wasn't until I was on the forums that I realized it was a regional thing. I obviously don't think its necessary and I've never actually been to a wedding with one. But if you want to do one, do it. If you don't and your FH won't even enjoy it, don't.

I’m highly debating one, but it’s mostly for the surprise. My DJ has done cute things with other clients like playing the Sonic the Hedgehog theme song when bringing out the grooms cake (which obviously had Sonic on it.) I’m thinking of doing with with a Game of Thrones cake and that theme song?

If I was in your position I don’t think I would. You already have plenty of cake and if FH isn’t crazy about it maybe you could find another small gesture that would surprise him instead Smiley smile

I'm surprising my FH with a grooms cake. It will be in the shape of a bulldog that passed away in January. Plus the grooms cake is going to be exactly what he wanted our wedding cake to be: chocolate with buttercream icing. I just can't imagine myself eating chocolate cake on my wedding day for the fear of crumbs in my teeth. Even though we're from PA and getting married in VA I think it's a southern tradition to include.

Not necessary at all, and uncommon where I am from. That said if you want to do something as a surprise maybe think a bit outside the box.

What is his favorite food? Maybe you could surprise him with some as a late night snack instead.

Does he like cheese? You could opt for a traditional (dessert-style) cheesecake or go for stacked wheels of cheese with crackers. Look on Pinterest for inspiration. The wheels of cheese would be nice to have out at cocktail hour.

If you are doing a groom's cake do you typically have it at the rehearsal dinner or at the wedding? I've heard both and am now very confused.

It's usually at the wedding either next to the wedding cake or on it's own table. I just think it's a lot of cake!

I’m not in charge of deciding that but I’ve never been against it. I believe my FH & his parents are having the grooms cake for our rehearsal dinner.. I’ve seen it done during the wedding too but to me it just makes more sense to me to have it during the rehearsal dinner & just like said before since your FH doesn’t like cake what about cheesecake instead?

I don't understand grooms cakes at all, we are not having one. But I assumed they were not at the wedding they were given at the rehearsal dinner? When did this turn into a wedding thing?

Just contacted the place doing my cake and surprise surprise! They include a free grooms cake! They just do a single sheet chocolate cake with drip icing. Looks like we're getting one anyways. Well since that's the case, I guess I will just get a smaller wedding cake. My goal is to not have leftovers lol.

My best friend got a grooms cake but they did it at the rehearsal dinner instead of the actual wedding. I live in Tennessee and it is pretty much expected to have a grooms cake but she said that they didn’t need another cake at the wedding since theirs was sized to feed everyone. Just a thought if you don’t want one at the wedding but still want to surprise him, and it doubles as dessert at the rehearsal dinner.

I don't think it's necessary if he doesn't like cake! My fiance doesn't like cake either, but he loves cookies & other desserts. I was thinking of surprising him with some other desserts he likes!

I had never heard of a groom's cake before joining this forum. I thought about getting one for the rehearsal dinner, but FH isn't a big cake person either. We can use the money for something else.
