Groom’s father as a groomsman, but not the best man

Megan, on April 13, 2021 at 1:07 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 5
My fiancé asked his dad to be his best man. He is also considering having his best friend be considered a best man also. However, his dad is now saying he feels weird with the title and would prefer to just be a groomsman. I know it’s common to have the father of the groom as a best man, but what about this situation? I think they should both have the title best man but wanting my fiancé to make the final decision.

To be honest, I don't know how common it is to have the dad as a groomsman in general. Normally, the father of the groom's role is being father of the groom. If he wants him as a groomsman or as 1 of 2 best men, let him do what he wants. It doesn't matter what other people think is weird or not.

Frankly I don't think anyone will think twice about it. But I think your future in-law should be able to do what makes him more comfortable.

FH has three brothers and they all have their dad as the BM, and FH is doing the same. It's more our of respect and tradition in their family!

If he doesn't feel comfortable being the best man, then allow him to be a groomsman. I don't think any of your guests will dwell on it or think about it honestly.

I don’t think there’s anything about a dad being “just a groomsman” , and if that’s what he’s more comfortable with, that matters a lot.

Somehow that comment is missing the word “weird” — meant to say I don’t think there’s anything weird about it!
