Groom's Outfit Troubles

Amanda, on December 1, 2021 at 6:12 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

So I really wanted my guy to be in a tux or at least a three piece suit. I really like vests. His dad insisted on buying a suit for him since he can wear it to weddings and funerals for the rest of his life. What a morbid thought. We are funding our wedding on our own since money from family would have too many strings attached. They went shopping and since his dad was buying my fiancé didn't listen to anything I had said previously. He felt pressure to do what his dad wanted and got just a basic suit for $900. No offense, but I have seen better suits at Good Will. My guy insists it will look better once it is tailored, but it is still a boring, very basic, box looking suit. I am really unhappy and want to go look at other options, but since the first was so expensive he won't. I have been in a funk for over a week because of it. What should I do?

Wow, I would be extremely unhappy about this. The groom's suit normally matches at least elements of the groomsmen's suits, it isn't some random suit that he's wearing by himself alone!

You need to be on the same page about this with your partner. I think he should approach this with his dad in the following way:

"Dad, the groomsmen's suits have to match my suit, and they cannot afford the one you have chosen. Therefore, I'm so grateful for this gift, and I will of course wear it to many weddings and funerals in future, but for this day, my groomsmen and I will be wearing something else."

and then be sure to be very careful in what money you choose to accept in future!

I don't think its necessary for the groom to match the groomsmen. Can he buy a vest to wear under it? If he wants, can he pursue cancelling the order. If he is happy with it, I would say this is actually a relatively minor issue and just leave it. Any suit will look better tailored and $900 isn't cheap. Good quality shoes, shirt, tie etc... will really pull it all together

Is your fiancé also unhappy with the purchase? Does he prefer tuxes or three piece suits? Does he really like vests?

I think if your future spouse is happy with his wedding outfit, then you should do nothing, except maybe help him accessorize it (if he wants help). If he doesn't like it and truly only bought it to make his dad happy, then just plan to rent something he likes for your wedding, and save the new suit for all the rest of the weddings (and funerals) he will attend in his life.

I agree that having a suit he can wear again is a smart idea, and you can buy a vest to match the theme of the wedding! You will be surprised what a nice vest, shirt, and tie, and some good tailoring will do! If your FH is happy, try to be optimistic Smiley smile

He doesn't want to shop for anything additional. It will be just the suit, I know in the long run it doesn't matter that much. My dress is very formal, so I know I am over-reacting. Just those pre-wedding jitters getting the best of my emotions. I still think it is a waste of money though.

He is happy, but didn't try on or even look at anything else. I just feel he should have at least tried on what I was envisioning and if he was miserable go for something more basic.

I wish that was the case, but he is unwilling to purchase anything else in addition like I have asked. He is happy with just the frumpy looking suit. He said he might get a tie and that would be it.

Ugh, bummer. I love vests too. But a non-matching, or "odd" vest as the fashion guys would call it, can look really sharp, is that something you might like?

That is something I absolutely love! To me it just looks really sharp. This is only the second thing we have disagreed about with all the wedding planning, so I guess that is pretty lucky.
